My 48RE tranny has been just fine towing up to 12-14K, have it serviced every 30,000 and it keeps on ticking just fine.

Thats the key to any automatic living a long healthy life.

Keep them cool and running on fresh fluid.

'06' 5.9 Cummins, 6 speed, good motor, no problems.  Only mods. Jake Brake, cold air intake, and no muffler.

My 02 7.3 superduty has been a good truck, its not a race car by any means but it does what I want. After exhaust, chip, air intake heater delete, map fooler double valve, and still on the list is some kind of cold air thing and the water/methonal injection is on its way. The 6.0 liter is a strong runner and I will have to put some more money into mine to keep with a 6.0 liter but I am getting there.

Be careful Antlerking.
That water/meth kit could be the demise of your head gaskets or worse yet bent connecting rods.

I must say the BEST mod is the exhaust brake. I don't have one because the commercial salesman who sold us our 2 trucks apparently didn't want to sell us on an additional $3500 upgrade.  :bash: When we told him we were so excited about the new 6 speed and the MUCH larger brakes because we tow trailers everywhere that should have been his 1st clue. I've talked to several owners with factory brakes and all are pleased. I realize that aftermarket ones are cheeper and may be better, however a stock rig "should" be easier to fix when you break down in podunk and have it towed to the closest dealership...

Mine was 1800 after market installed by Dodge, jake made a exhaust brake just for the Cummins 5.9, as an after market.  Then in '07' it started to come as a factory option.  I have close to 80k miles and still almost all the brake pads still.

I agree.  The PacBrake was definitely the best thing I have done on my '05.

I installed a Pacbrake PRXB on my Dodge right after I bought it in '07. I've towed my 33' fifth wheel all over the NW and have yet to find a hill/pass that I needed to use the trucks service brakes on. Most of the time I'm actually having to give it some throttle to keep from slowing too much.

You can smoke a lot of center force clutches for the price of one juice box!
That's right because the Center Force clutch can't handle the torque from a diesel engine in stock form let alone Edge'd.
Do it right the first time and throw a South Bend clutch in it.
I haven't had to replace my clutch yet in either truck but will keep that in mind.
Cummins exchaust brakes were avaialbe in 03 for any  Stick dodge from the dealer. My price could have been off since that was some time ago. I was just pissed because we could have wrapped it into the truck loan, and a good salesman, should have looked for the up sell. ESPECIALLY since he was the FLEET sales person!  :bash: I used to put on over 120K a year pulling trailers, now i'm lucky if i do 50k. At $3.50-$5a gallon i've found that it is much cheaper to ship full trailerloads than try and run them myself. I still would really like a Pac brake but don't do the driving i used to to really justify it.. Or seperate with the cash.

Realistically, you were somewhat forced into a good decision courtesy of the salesman.  Those factory exhaust brakes for the 03-07 were much less than stellar.  The 07.5 to present are better but still not as good as PacBrake or even a BD brake.
When your clutch gives out, this one's the ticket.  Wish they had it available when I cooked mine back in late '06. :(
The SD3250-6k ............. http://southbendclutch.com/dd.html
You will need their upgraded clutch hydraulics with this one too.

Maybe. My trucks put alot of wear and tear on with out ANY kind of exhaust brake. Since i plan on running these 2 into the ground i wish any reduced W&T could have been prevented. Gona be a while before they figure out the tire 3 emmisions bs for deisels. Wouldn't buy a new one even if i could.  :twocents:

I went with the 6.4 powerstroke because I couldnt find a newer duramax for the same price.  So far my truck did great up in the mountains this winter for elk camp.  Started up in the cold much nicer than my buddies with the 6.0.  The emissions stuff isn't as bad as made out to be but the gas mileage could be better.  Oh well, you buy a truck to do work, not for economy, right?
