Mossberg 835
« on: April 09, 2011, 08:27:32 AM »
Im going to give turkey hunting a shot this year and was just wondering what is the choke and ammo that you use to give the best pattern for a Moss 835. Im trying to save myself a little time and money. Im not able to get to the range as much as I would like to. any suggestions would help! thanks

I don't have a Mossberg, but there really isn't a perfect match to a specific model.  I use a Rem 870 Super Mag and I'm shooting Rem Nitro Turkey 3" #6. That's just what gives the best pattern with an Undertaker choke.  But, it is very specific to the gun and what works best for you. The only way to know for sure is to get out and pattern.  Otherwise you're just going out there hoping and either missing or just winging the bird.   :bash:

If you're just looking for advice on sizes to try out though, I'd look at #4 or #6 2oz. Winchester Supreme or Remington. I use 3" as a personal preference.

What kind of sights are you using?

I have gotten the best results with the stock choke it comes with.  Ditto with the ammo above.  It patterns better then the hevishot.

Whatever patterns best (4, 5, or 6's). Both shot size and manufacture canl vary on identical guns pattern.  Should have a minimm of 6 hits in the vitals of the head and neck .. I prefer at least a dozen hits and not being dependent on the BB gods guiding that magic bb to the target.  My 835 prefers Federal # 6's, but yours may not ....

I use my 835 for both pheasants and turkeys. I shoot the Environ classic doubles 6 shot for the pheasant and  Estate 6 shot also depending on my mood. Both perform well with the factory chokes. For turkeys I shoot 3 inch HM mag blend shells and they pattern well and are devastating on a turkey but with that said I also  use a Carlson choke for HM and the same choke will handle dead coyote rounds from environ metals. The 835 (at least mine) seems to digest almost anything I have thrown at it with a killing pattern, but you need to test it and get comfortable with yours so your confidence level is there. On pheasant loads the Fiocchi seems to burn the cleanest which on a long day is important to you and I have had good results with 6 shot. Good luck!
