I just received a knight bighorn and I have no m/l experience.

It came with no nipples and no manual or other parts/tools besides what is on the gun.

It does have a bolt and breech plug.

Should this have come with 2 nipples? One for #11 and one for percussion caps?
It appears I can purchase replacement nipples for around $12

Is it worth buying the 209 conversion ($80)?  Where I would hunt with it allows 209 primers from what I can tell.  I would also get the Breech bolt with the kit which would save me some $ buying a standalone tool.

I found this siteby doing some googling and it looks like you all have a decent amount of experience with this model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!
John

The Bighorn is a favorite here in WA because it works so well with #11 and percussion caps and we are not allowed to use 209 primers.  Usually the Bighorn comes with two breach plugs, one with the 209 nipple integrated with it, the other can use either a #11 nipple or a percussion cap nipple.  All these parts can be had by contacting Knight.

I’ve used the 209 primers at the range and while they do give the Bighorn a flatter trajectory (and thus longer range), they can hang up on the Knight’s striker resulting in a fail-to-fire.  It would not be my first choice in a 209 gun.

Thanks for the info!

Does anyone want to part with their 209 setup?

Also, I saw in another thread that their is an electronic copy of the bighorn manual floating around.

Anyone have it handy?

Thanks!
John

It will make you a good gun, just make sure you use #11 or musket caps and you will be good to go.

This is from the original post. He says 209's are legal where he's hunting. (he's in Kansas)

I have the 209 kit that came with mine. I'll let it go cheap. PM me an offer. You would not get the breach plug wrench, but I will let you have this cheap enough that you can get the wrench and still save on the 80.00 factory fee.

Didn't know if they were legal there or not. Never hunted there but I think all states are o.k. with #11's or musket caps :dunno:

From his original post he says "Where I would hunt with it allows 209 primers from what I can tell."  Seems like if it were legal he might as well try the 209's......I thought maybe you knew of a problem with that particular model of rifle and using 209's.......... :dunno:

With the Big Horn, Wolverine, and the MK-85... the can be a bit of a problem with shooting a NFPJ 209 (bare primer) - it is possible for the back pressure from the shot to push the 209 out of the nipple and it can become a missle itself... I would advise using a moderate charge and a moderate weight bullets when using a 209.  I believe the FPJ (red plastic jacket) with a 209 inserted in it to be a little safer.  It to can be blown off the post but normally is not near as violent as a bare primer.  Either way when using a 209 in any open breech gun - use caution
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

The 209 kit includes a bunch of red plastic jackets and the tool to press the primers into them and remove the jackets after firing.
