Down rigger trolling rod opinions
« on: April 16, 2011, 06:56:28 PM »
Could really use some opinions. I am trying to set up for salmon trolling and am looking to buy 4 rods. I would like to get 2 in the 9' range (for the down riggers) and 2 in the 10'6" range (to run divers out past the outboards). If you have any experience or any opinions on any make rods let's here it, please try to give specific model #s so I can look them up. Here is what I have looked at so far. I am open to any make of quality equipment. Also Looking for some halibut rods also.

Lamiglas XFC-903, XFC-904, XCC-934, XCC-1064, XFC-1064F
Loomis SAR-1084C, SAR-1265C, SAR1266C

I used to run the SAR1265C and now I run the SAMR1265C. Best downrigger rods I have ever used  :twocents:

The G-Loomis 1265C are great rods for both diver rods and down rigger rods (a little long but they work fine) and the G-Loomis SAMR1084C or SAMR1174C definitely for downrigger rods. Used the SAMR1174C exclusively for 3 years in AK on my charter boat and swear by them for both trolling and mooching.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

1265's are perfect. 1084 is a bit too stiff. You can really crank those Sar 1265's over. The 1084 is a good troller with a dropper but pops your clips if you try to crank em down to much. Great diver rod as the pull from the diver dosent load em as much as the 1265.
I have both and love the 1265. even sold one or two to antlershed at cabelas parking lot! ;)

Shimano Convergance. $70

Why do you pay the high prices for a Loomis?

Weight and sensitivity right?

You aren't holding a DR rod all day and you aren't trying to feel the fish taking the bait.

Paying the premium for a Loomis to be used as a DR rod is silly IMO.

I should also add.....I can't remember if they are rated exactly the same, but I think the SAR is a little slower action than the SAMR. First picture is an SAR1265 with a keeper sturgeon on the other end, and you can see the load on the rod. The second picture is my SAMR1265 loaded in the downrigger.

Hey rick, are you using the Shimano Convergance mooching rod, was looking them up and looks like they have several different convergance models. Which model are you using

Also I'm looking at the Shimano Charter Special TR-1000LD reels any one have any input on these? Or any other reels?

Any one have any more input? I know there has to be more than 3 or 4 people on this site that are avid trollers.

Thanks

We have fished tons of rods off downriggers and as back rods with no downrigger. The SAR1265 makes a great back rod, plenty of backbone to hold heavier wieghts. For downriggers we went back to GLASS rods, LAMIGLAS CG 90 DR, a 9' rated at 15 - 30 HEAVY. We also use the CG 89 MHR, 8' 9" rated 15 - 30 MED. HEAVY. More fish are hooked using glass rods off the downrigger now than ever before. The glass rods are a little slower and gives the fish a second or so more time to get the hook in his mouth. If I was looking for 4 new rods for trolling and downrigger fishing I would grab the CG 90 DR as back rods and the CG 89 MHR for the downriggers.

I have two different models. I use the Canadian style (short butt, long fore-grip) with single action Shimano knucklebuster reels. The rods are CVC M106-2

If someone thats fishing with me isn't used to the Canadian style rods I have the traditional style rods and casting reels. They're model CVC L100M-2

I run Shimano Tekota 500s on the casting style rods.

The Charter Specials are great reels though.
