New to Archery & need some suggestions please.
« on: April 23, 2011, 12:33:28 PM »
A friend and I are taking the archery plunge this fall.  We both are longtime modern firearm hunters tiring of modern firearm crowds.  We are setup with equipment and practicing.  Can anyone suggest a GMU or region that we should consider?  We generally hunt in the 49 degree north or Douglas units - but we'd consider anywhere in the state.  I appreciate any advice you have.  Thanks

I would stick with the areas you already know, it seems to me you would have better sucess that way. This would also help greatly with the learning curve of archery.

:yeah: most of the time when I go to a new area its because I'm bored hunting my normal areas. I never see as many animals hunting new areas as I do when I'm in the areas I normally hunt.

I agree. Stick to where you know. You already have a huge learning process ahead of you, that's one more thing you don't want to have to worry about right now. On another note have you decided the way your going to hunt yet(tree stand, blind, or spot and stalk)?
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is who you actually are while your reputation is merely who others think you are.

In addition to the areas you're already familiar with, you might also look for some private lands close to home that may be off limits for hunting with a gun, and try to get permission for bow hunting only. Or even public lands that may be near residential areas and may have firearm restrictions in place, and the only way to legally hunt is with a bow.

If you can get access to some places like this close to home, you can try to hunt them when you may only have a morning, or an evening to hunt. And being close to home you can spend more time in the off season scouting these areas.
