Does anyone use lead conicals anymore?

All you ever hear about these days are sabots, and specialty muzzleloader bullets.

I see the benefits of the modern projectiles, but being that scopes aren't allowed in Washington, most guys aren't going to be able to take advantage of the high velocity, and flatter shooting of the new fangled bullets.

I think I may give some Hornady Great Plains bullets a go.

100yds and under,a big chunk of lead at moderate speeds is gonna put the hurt on an animal.

Use to shoot them all the time. I just get better groups with the newer twist rates 1:28 with sabots. If conicals shot the best in my guns, I would use them in a heart beat. But the sabots shoot best so thats what I use. I burned more then a few cans of powder and a couple of packs of maxi hunters back in the early days.

No Excuses makes a great conical that shot well out of my winchester X150 with 1in 28 twist.

I shoot the Hornady Great Plains 385 gr with 100gr of Pyrodex RS and a musket cap in a Knight BK-92.

Don't need anything else for a muzzleloader. Sometimes it isn't about how far away you shoot animals.

Hell, people used to brag about how close they got........

I have shot conicals for as many years as I have been shooting M/L well almost. I agree a large heavy conical holds a devastating amount of energy down range. I have not had to look for any animals I have shot with conicals. I shoot No Excuse, Bull Shop and White mostly and through in some my brother casts as well. I shoot White rifle they are designed for conical and shoot them with amazing accuracy.

I have shot the .50 cal 348 grain great plains as well, and shot well out of my T/C, although have yet to see what they will do to an animal. I would assume they would do fine. I got a few powerbelts and am eager to see how they shoot compared to the great plains.
