Deer to a turkey decoy?
« on: April 26, 2011, 11:15:04 AM »
While out trying for toms this weekend we had a doe come to our turkey decoy.  She saw it from a distance and slowly came in pacing back and forth trying to smell it and finally came right in.  Anyone else have this happen?  I know deer are very curious but this was new to me.

I think they actually interact more often in the wild than we expect..  :chuckle:

I've had them come in quite often when predator calling. One actually tried to sniff my mojo woodpecker decoy and got slapped in the face by the wing. Pretty comical watching them interact with your decoys.

Whitetails in particular love to mess with turkeys.  I've watched them in the summer on a big opening across from my cabin and they'll run out of nowhere to chase turkeys around.  Sometimes they'll feed down out of the trees and then suddenly bolt over to the turkeys and chase them around until they fly.  I've watched them chase turkeys clear across the field and into the woods.  I have no idea why they do it, but it certainly doesnt surprise me that they'd mess with a decoy.  I don't know if they'd actually do anything to the turkeys if they caught them or not-but the turkeys sure don't wait around to find out.

Yeah. That happened to me last year. A doe came down the hill and spote my set-up - a Jake and a hen. It was way cool. She came forward, then walked backwards a few paces. She snorted a few times. Then she came right in and began sniffing them. She never saw me and I don't think she scented me either. It was like she was coming down the deer trail and saw turkeys but there was something not quite right about these turkeys. It was pretty entertaining.

As far as chasing turkeys, far be it for me to understand what an animal like a deer is doing but, it sounds like they are playing, having fun. At the birds expense. Pretty cool whatever their motive.
