tree stand harness

Anyone here make their own tree stand harness? Im wondering how safe it would be

Sounds a bit risky. I'd stick to a proven style and not skimp on safety gear. Also, get those straps in your nether regions tight right off the get go. Worst case you take a fall and if things "cinch up" real quick you could end up hurt worse.

Best not to go the cheap route with safety stuff.  I finally bought the hunter safety system before this past season because I was tired of hunting from my treestand with a bar around me while bow hunting.  I had bought an archery tree stand with nothing but a seat and I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I thought it was spooky as hell without a safety harness so I picked one up.  It's still spooky, but at least I know I won't kill myself.

I've used the ones that come with the stands, and have made my own for Mountain Climbing... That said they work, but they are not comfortable  and you will go without to your own detriment. I spent the $120 on the nice mesh vest style after i almost fell out of my stand.  The vests are cammo have good pockets and are easy to wear and get into and out of. Well worth it if you ask me.

I think I might bite the bullet and go for a nice one at cabelas, they're expensive but then again,, I could make one and die possibly. So when you guys climb into the stand is the harness the first thing you make sure of? or is that after you get everything situated? Id probably want to do it first. Im building my ladder treestand and I'm wanting to go about this as safely as possible

My harness is on when I leave the truck. My strap is on the tree before I leave the ground. When I get to my height I want to hunt I double check it, get seated, then double check it again. Then...I pull my bow up and get set up. You can hunt 1000 times safely but only fall once.

Use some ones free be that came with the stand once and you will pay the $120 just for the ease and convieneince of the vest style.

yeah most come with harnesses, my question is which is the easiest vest harness.

i was gonna get the Under armor one... i was using the one that came with hte stands and it worked great.

never go back to a harness vest.

some fashion theirs out of rock climbing gear, which the 20'Up company is similar to.

This will be my first year in a tree stand. I plan to use what 1970's rock climbers used, a "swami"(see photo below). This is just 2-inch tubular webbing wrapped twice (snugly) and tied with a water knot. I don't understand the fuss over a full-body harness. If you're anchored to the tree above your harness, you can't fall more than 10 or 20 inches. Climbers have taken huge falls on swami belts and the webbing costs about 5 or 10 bucks. Anchor to the tree with 1-inch webbing and a locking carabiner.
