which mouth call?

I want to get a mouth call for coyotes I am planning on getting a howler and I was wondering what call you like and which ones work the best

I have a couple of Ricks calls and they are nice.  I haven't used Ricks howlers so can't coment on them.  I use a Sceery with the big bell removed and a Lil-dog because they are easier for me to call with.  I have a whole drawer full of calls and they have all called critters.  For me the deciding factor is how little air is needed to make good sounds, I have asthma.  Open reeds are more versitile and closed reeds are easier to get a decent sound bite type calls are a nice middle ground.  If you talk to twenty callers I doubt you will have more than a couple that have the same favorite.

For starting out I'd pick a quality closed reed and open reed Rick has a nice set and practice all the time.  I'd put a tape on the truck player and practice while driving, it lets you practice alot and not bug anyone.

This is what I use : Bearmanric calls, Tweety, Primos Lil dog. I think these are the best sounding calls of all 30 mouth calls I have.

Rick does have some nice looking calls but I dont have one so obviously never tried one. My buddy has one and it sounds awesome, and looks killer too. But his is not a howler.

For howlers my favorite production call is the Primos Hot Dog - I seriously have not heard a better howler than that one. Barks and howls are very realistic. Close 2nd is between the Yipper Yapper or the Lil Dog. The nice thing about the Lil Dog is that it comes with 2 mouth pieces and I use the green piece w/o the horn as my main rabbit & pup distress caller and use the white piece with the horn for female & young dog vocalizations. I think Yipper Yapper (by bugling bull game calls) has a GREAT sound but does seem not quite as loud as the Primos calls, but plenty loud enough. But I think it is a great call for a beginner as it is very easy to use and make good sounds with. It has a button tab to push on the reed and change the pitch, comes in camo (which has a cool factor) and is cheap. All these calls also make good distress sounds as well. I use the Yipper Yapper for female/young calls way more than the Lil Dog.

I would stay away from the Predator Quest Ruffidawg calls. They do sound good for distress but I think they are harder to use with the curved bill mouthpiece and it seems just a little bit of moisture (spit) bungs them up.

But with all this said, I would go with BearManRic's calls, the ones I've heard all sound great, they look totally awesome, are handmade here in the USA, and you are supporting a local guy and site sponsor. I better take my own advice soon and send him off some money for a few calls!

I think distress calls are much easier to start with and make proper sounds. Not only do I get better results, you have to kind of understand the ky-oat language so you know what the vocalizations mean and which to use. I think you can just as easily run a dog off before calling one in. Anyway, thats my

I am new here, but I give a big +1 to the above quote. The way I started out was to start with closed reed calls to help me get a feel for the sound and due to the ease of use then I slowly started to work into open reed calls which (at least to me) took more practice to master.

Try to find a call that will do most all calls. I started on open reed calls and just made noise at first. I just keep at it so it sounds pretty good now from what my friends tell me. Get a Randy Anderson DVD and watch him. He has several DVDs out. I have all of them and drove my wife nuts listening to them and playing along, but who cares..... You'll get the hang of it if you practice.

Quite a few manufactures use the same stainless reeds, so there are tons of calls out there that, although listed differently, sound exactly the same.

The reeds are just glued or pressed in.

The body of the call, depending upon what its been made out of can make a difference.
Acrylic-hand turned, like wood, wood-hand turned, plastic-injection molded or hand turned, aluminium-hand turned.....you name it. Different materials make slightly different sounds, and I think only the animals can notice the very minute differences, I know I sure can't if it isn't much.

the metal Reeds are JC Reeds. there are certain way's to tune them. my closed reed that i call my bear call. ie a Tuned reed for a Raspier sound. the Delrin call's i have make awsome sound's. think Dense wood's cocabola, african blackwood and Desert ironwood make great sounds they are very dense. Littletoes good stuff there. Rick

I have the call on the left that Rick sent to me to try out. He doesn't know me from Adam but that is the call I use all the time right now. It is very easy to use and sounds great. I'm sure you could use that call for just about any 4 legged animal and they will respond. Thanx again Rick, nice calls. Happy camper here ..............

Yea, I'd say its this custom Tuning that separates the men from the boys.

An experienced coyote hunter knows the sound he's after....dogs beware!

YA thats why I prefer a diaphram call .. I can change the pitch from high to low and I am still not convinced on the electric calls ... I hear some people tell me yes on the fox pro but how many times do they go out to call in one coyote ... last time I used an electric caller I WENT MANY TIMES TO CALL ONE IN , Then I mastered the diaphram and its 1 out of every 3 times I GO .....most I killed in one day was 7... all within a mile and half radius...

I'm working on some custom Diaphrams.  Hunted Arizona with red listened to him on stand with Diaphrams sweet. They should be added to your calls. Rick
