BoaT question
« on: May 09, 2011, 10:13:56 PM »
I just recently bought a 14 foot aluminum boat with a 42lb thrust trolling motor. Would it be okay to take it Pike Fishing on the Pend oreiille up by usk? or is it too small to go out there? Thanks guys, this is actually my first time owning a boat.

I don't know that river, but if it flows very fast at all you will probably need more motor. 42 lbs thrust is good for that boat on a lake, but is most likely not enough for a river unless it flows pretty slow. That size motor has all it can do on the Columbia here in East Wenatchee going against the current so use your own judgement but err on the side of caution.  :twocents:

I personally would not go if that's the only motor you have.  I have fished the river quite a bit and would want an outoard.  In the sloughs and coves your electric would be fine but your going to have problems going to and from places.

I have a boat with a 200 HP motor and a Minn Kota 101 lb thrust and that river, especially as fast as it is flowing now is difficult.  Wait until the runoff recedes and you could be ok.

Size of boat would be fine but not with the electric motor this time of year.  I go duck and goose hunting on the PO, and we use a 14' with electric motor on it, but that's only because we launch from a buddies cabin and only have to go 100-200 yards.
