First Turkey season was a bust
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:05:39 PM »
Well...... This was my first season ever hunting for turkeys. Only the second time i have been hunting. Went out twice this year, spent a total of 6 days. Learned some things, had some fun, saw a few birds....all on private land :( I will spend more time researching and scouting next year. I need to "understand" the Turkey better.

Hopefully next year will be a better year. Maybe a deer or elk will be my first animal down. Happy hunting!!

Don't feel bad. My tag is still un-punched. Gives you more incentive to get back out there. You still have 2 weeks.

And ask the landowners if you can hunt turkey ... doesn't cost a cent to ask !

Don't feel bad-the learning curve for turkeys is a steep one and most turkey hunters struggle the first 2-3 years unless they are fortunate enough to either have access to flocks on private ground or can go with and experienced hunter.  I'd be just guessing, but I suspect that the majority of birds taken in Washington are taken on private ground-next year (or even this year for the remainder of the spring hunt and the fall/winter hunts) don't be afraid of knocking on some doors.  Later in the hunt many landowners will allow you to hunt as their immediate friends and relatives are done for the year.  I don't judge my hunts any longer on whether or not I shot something, I just appreciate the time out in the woods and spring turkey hunting ranks right at the top!!!  Keep at it, persisitence will pay off!
