Shrimping
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:21:57 AM »
Hope you guys and gals can get out for the last day of shrimping on Saturday.  Lots of shrimp still crawling around.  Four of us yesterday dropped four pots off Lopez Is. First pot had 130, next pot had 290+ in it.  We still had two pots in the water!  Wish we had more people along as we dumped more than two limits more back into the water.  Be sure to be out in 300+ feet.  Not sure how they calculate the quota but I think they blew it this year... giving us only six days.

Caught five or six lings but no keepers, beautiful day on the water!

Sorry, no pics, gotta get my wife to get them off the phone for me.

Yes, spots.  Early in the season we limited in 240 to 280 ft but they seem to have moved deeper.  If in 300'+ be sure to have 400' of line as the bow from the current can either sink your small float of lift your pot off the bottom with a large float.  Last Saturday, all four of our pots moved 1 1/2 miles, even with 10 to 15 pounds of weight in the pot.   :yike:

And make sure you bring someone you don't like very much to pull them up if you don't have a pot puller... I was that dummy a couple of weeks ago - friend asked me to go shrimping and I said "you bet" before I asked "do you have a pot puller?"  We were in 280' on Saturday and lost our bouys for about 3 hours until the tide eased up a bit.  Didn't do very well, either.

Sucker!  Did the hand pulling a couple times down in Hood Canal out of my 13' inflatable.  People looked at us like we were nuts.   :chuckle:  Got lots of shrimp though.

I am gonna be down that way, too. I will probably be by myself as my buddy backed out on me at the last minute.  :bash:  I have a single pot but I do have a good pot puller. I plan to motor down tomorrow and find a spot to crash for the night, on anchor if necessary. If anybody wants to pitch in I could motor over to the dock and pick them up for Saturday...
I am hoping to catch my first ever cod while the pot soaks so if you know how it's done please come and show me. My boat is very comfy for 2 people to fish from.

We'll be out there.  Leaving about two since it is an afternoon/evening flat tide.  We will be dropping the pots a mile or so west of Colville Is.

OSCAR's not going to make it though, I guess he'd better tell the story when he swims home.

They blew the current prediction on the incoming tide today... again!   :bash:

Didn't drop until 2:30 and the first set still drifted a third of a mile.  Lots of scallops but few shrimp.  Dropped two pots, brought everyone else home and went back down to a limit + another that I had to toss.  Oh well, still a bunch of yummy shrimp for the barbie.

At least I could pick out the smaller ones.
