Jerry-Rigged Elk Rack
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:47:49 PM »
Hey all, thought I would share a couple pics of the rag-horn I shot last year and did my own home job of mounting it on the wall.  For about $15 bucks it didn't turn out half bad. I thought it would be cool if other people would show off their work too.  Also, for those of you who are the experts please feel free to share some tips.

Who's Jerry???? Just kidding. Next time try to cut the skull cap at more of an angle (thin at the back and thicker on the front) then it will stand more erect. Although you can hang them higher on the wall the way you did it.

I've done a few deer myself and they turned out pretty good. I like to use leather or even felt for the skull cap myself, but I kind of like what you did with yours. You wouldn't happen to be a red- headed guy with a dull razor would you? :chuckle:

Here is what Ive done with my racks the last few years. I didnt have extra money (even for a euro mount), so I slabbed a slice of wood off something, dried it, sanded it, and polyurethaned it. The elk and the small 2pt were mounted on Maple. The 3pt was mounted on Alder. I wrapped the bases with felt and stuffed them with tissue. Its extra cheap and it cost me a can of polyurethane that I still have 95% of. It is easy too, as you don't have to clean the skulls very much, just cut the antlers off and dry them. Hope you guys like em.

I like it. natural look. I like how you have the natural wood and shape of the trunk intact.

I like the wood backing idea.
