Need help assembling my Taurus 1911 45!
« on: June 16, 2011, 07:45:04 AM »
Hey guys.  Once again I come to you asking for firearms advice.

I've got a Taurus 1911 45 and I disassembled it a couple days ago to clean it, now when it was time to put it back together, I've hit a wall.

I'm almost done, except now I'm stuck at the step where I must insert the slide stop through the  hole in the lower reciever (and making sure it slides through the corresponding hole in the barrel link).  It goes in but stops about halfway through.  Try as I might, I simply cannot get it in any further.  It should just fit right in, right?  I shouldn't have to use tools to get this part in.

Any ideas?

You have the slide part way back?  No you do not need any tool.  pm sent.

this brings back memories....

Thanks for the video pianoman.  After watching it, it seems like I'm going through the right steps, but the step at 8:03 in the video is where I'm having my hitch.  It simply won't snap in!   :bash:

Woodchuck, that's a mighty tempting offer!  :chuckle:

Did you get it through the ring?  Then you just need to line up the slide stop and the cutout on the slide...

OK, completely disassemble entire weapon.  Put in box.   Shake vigorously.  Open box, see if gun is assembled.  If not, repeat until assembly is complete.

Visualize through the slide stop hole. Is the barrel link hole lined up? If not, slide off the slide, put a little gun grease or vasaline on the link to hold it in place, slide the slide back on slowly. Line up the link with the hole in the frame. You could also use a toothpick to line it up. If this one has a full length guide rod, then pull the recoil spring but leave the barrel bushing in. Sometimes the spring will press on the barrel lug/link enough to move it out of alignment. If your link is 'sloppy' then when you slide the slide on the frame, do it 'muzzle down'.  A 1911 can be assembled in the field in the dark once you get the hang of it.

there are two notches on the slide, the smaller one , furthest back, lines up with a dimple on the slide release when the slide release is in the hole. slight back and forth on the slide may help get everything to line up. it should just slide right in.
