If its still hot and dry the land may still be locked up and inaccessable due to fire danger. But my bet is that it would at least be open to walk in by then.Maybe even for drive in for the permit holders.Beings deer season is only a week away.Plus they want to cull those elk out pretty bad. This will be an easy tag to fill.

I pulled the same tag and also the doe tag! I am hoping that they keep the gates locked up atleast durning the week but if they don't, still shouldn't have a problem with this hunt. It's going to be a fun one

I have the tag too.  I plan on at least three trips down to get familiar with the area.  I will stay the whole season and hunt my ass of.  I really need the meat....

If you come in from the north from hyw 12 there is some state land that is always open.  And there is enough of it to find a cow.

It just feels more like hunting when they are closed :chuckle:  The whole unit is open to hunt in muzzy. I am more worried about filling the doe tag than the elk tag.

Why does everyone think this is going to be so easy?  These are ELK.  They're not stupid.  Look at the hunter success for Winston for the last few years.
Method   Antlerless Harvest   Antlered Harvest  Total Harvest    Number Hunters      Hunter Success
2009
Archery                  97                31              128         2314                      5.50%
Modern Firearms    0               189              189         2394                      7.90%
Multiple Weapons    1                 3                          4             31                    12.90%
TOTALS                   98               223               321

2010

Archery                  191                44               235          2007                    11.70%
Modern Firearms    0                177               177          2323                      7.60%
Multiple Weapons    3                  7                10             44                    22.70%
TOTALS                 194                221               415

This doesn't look like a walk in the park to me.  Looks about like any other elk hunt. Lots of hard work.  Just this time I know there are a lot of elk in the area.  Doesn't make it sound like a slam dunk though.

Those are general season numbers.  Last time I looked at the early muzzy cow permit hunt it was right around 50% success.

I just looked at 2009 for this hunt and the success was 36.4%.
