300 RUM handloading question

i know a few on here have the same rifle as me and i am hoping they will chime in. i have a sendero in 300 RUM and have a couple reloading questions. i am loading berger 210 grain bullets over retumbo. my gun shoots real well at 90 grains and 2830 fps. i read of people pushing these bullets over 3000. at 91 grains, where the firing pin hits the primer pops back out, showing pressure. 90 grains doesnt do this. also i bought a box of factory 180 sciroccos that dont shoot real well, and these are showing more pressure signs (primer popped back out and extractor mark on teh case.

i would like to get more velocity with the bergers, or at least someone to tell me that 2830 is plenty. anyone have any insight?

I have the 700 REM in 300 RUM. I shoot the 180 scirocco's and thats it, they shoot very well out of my gun and I never have and signs of pressure.. Sorry I cna't help ya with more than that...

I have taken atleast 4 elk and 8 deer with this combo. Never had one take another step......

2830 seems real scaled back to me. I used to load for a pard, the exact gun, 180 siroccos @3460 average. Had one go over 3500! After seeing the handy work of a 210 berger in a 300 RUM first hand this hunting season, I wouldn't shoot em, ever! If you wanna go big, try the 208 A-maxs, or make damn sure you hit bone like the BOTW boys, ie; high shoulder shot... Later

what was wrong with the berger?
i always take high shoulder shots with my rifle.
this gun consistently shoots 1/2" groups with the 210 bergers and retumbo.

They don't expand. Saw a pard shoot a 80lb speed goat at 600 yards, I called a miss, cause I saw dust fly up behind him, no reaction whatsoever from the goat. It ran about 100 yards give or take and laid down. After watching it for a while, it laid down dead. Gutted it out, looked like somebody poked a whole through it with re-bar, pinky hole in, pinky hole out.  That may be fine in open country, but over here, thats a lost animal. He also had trouble on a bull, and muley buck last year. I've killed enough critters I know what I like. I like to hear a loud shhhwwwaaaack when the boolit hits, and I like the engine compartment to look like raspberry soup. You won't get that with said combo. If you like high shoulder shots, they'll prolly work for ya. Shoot 96 grains of RL 25 with a 180 sirocco and see whatcha think! grin... Later

If it shoots that good I would not play with it. A few more fps wil not make to big of diffrence unless you are shooting very long range.

The pard is shooting 200 accubonds outta a win mag @ 3080. That RUM should be rippin em out there a hellava lot faster than 2860. I disagree, squeeze every last fps out of it, with good accuracy, Barrels are cheap.

Because they make more powders than Retumbo?  I would say he's shooting long range, given the boolit, and chambering.. Lotsa other slow powders, give em a try, don't get stuck on one. Later

150fps more at 500 yards with that 210g would only be about 4-5" less drop. With it shooting 1/2 which is very good for a mag, I would take that and stick with it myself. Most people should not shoot past 500 yards in my mind. I spend 1,000's in ammo and countless hours on the range to do it

I also know that some loads use the h50bmg you might check that out, one of the slower burning powders out there.

Good then. Thats why I shoot a 257, not a 25/06. Or my 300 Roy, not a 300 Win Mag. My theory, if your gonna shoot a magnum, shoot a magnum, why not load it to its full potential? Maybe he should be shootin a 06?

I think he said he is already shooting 90g of retumbo which is 1grain more then that load you listed and he is 2830fps and that load data from someone on the net says that with 1g less it's 100fps fatser Unless barrel length is diffrent.

Sounds to me like there's a problem with the gun. I'd have a gunsmith check it out. You shouldn't be getting primers backing out with factory ammo.

Same length barrel carp. My 257 shoots 100fps faster than the pards Rem due to the longer throat/free bore. Same loads, same chrony...

Looks like from hodgons site the 3 fastest with The heavy bullets are the retumbo,h1000,h50bmg in that order.

My buddy and I both use H1000 and federal 215 primers with 200 grain accubonds. His uses 89 grains and mine 91 both are very accurate.

Are you set on shooting the 210?  One of my RUMs shoots the 190 VLDs much better and is over 3000 fps.  The Sendero seems to really like the 175 VLDs.  Over 3300 fps.  Retumbo is the only powder I use in the RUMs. Send a PM in you want load info and specs.

I haven't played with the 210's yet.  I am shooting the 168 grain VLD with 96 grains of H1000 in 300rum.
This is the one I have had best success with thus far.

I havewill data rightwith from berger that showsyou max loadat of 92a grains retumbo andand velocity of 2930 so i do realize that isoon am close according to bergers info. I have been all over the web looking at this stuff and realize lots of people arent 100% truthfull online. My rifle isis at the smiht now having a brake.installed and I.will have him look it over for.anything out of.thebordinary. I will get some of the factory brass and post a pic and the brass of m handload and post also. I am not set on the 210 bergers but would like to stay around 200 or heavier.

I have brakes and Pads on two of my lightweight RUMs and don't have a brake on the Sendero.  The sendero has the stock pad which isn't a much of a recoil pad, but with the overall weight of the gun, the kick is very minimal.  As for the two light weight guns, they honestly have the recoil of a 243.

I do not have a brake, and shooting the 168's and even the 180's is very manageable in my XCR.  It is not a heavy gun, so their is a lot of felt recoil.  I have tried the Nosler E-tip in 180 and didn't get very good results, but had I had gotten good results I was prepared to put a Defensive Edge Brake on it.  Those 100% copper bullets are long and provided a lot of resistance in the barrel.  They kick like a mule.  I would imagine they are much like the 200+ bullets these other guys are talking about, but I haven't shot any of those just yet.

Your excused. grin.... Just giving you somthing to think about with other loads. Have you done much killin with Bergers? I'd give the 208's a try, see what they do. Also, borrow another chrony from a buddy, yours could be haywire? Just a thunk.... Later

Ya I am thinking about trying other loads. Just hard too with the accuracy results from my current combo. I will try the amax. I will also try another chrono but I think it is close the ballistic calculator gave me correct come up clicks to 520 yards. I haven't hunted with bergers yet. But have heard mostly good things. I just want something that will hit an elk like a freight train. I tried 200 acubonds and they weren't near as accurate. Over an inch. I will talk to Shawn at defensive edge when pick up my gun. See what he says about tell velocity.

The A-Max is not a hunting bullet. I know a few guys here have used it for specifically that and had good results. But before you use it, you should know the Hornady specifically calls this a target round.

As far as your velocity.. it seems a little low for that combo. But, you should consider the BC of the Berger.. the 210 is in the 6s.. that means even at 2800 fps at 400 yards plus it maintains its path and velocity better than a 180 scirocco or accubond.

If you are gettin MOA groups with it.. that is fine.

Personally... I shoot 210 Bergers loaded with 87.9 grains of RL 25. I get 2950 FPS out of my 26" Hart barrel and get MOA results. I am not going to change likely, but might try Retumbo as I hear it is more stable in colder weather.

Anyway.. What I am saying is your results are good as long as you dont have pressure probelms and your gun likes it. Just be sure to factor in BC along with velocity. Check out a few ballistic graphs and you will see.

I haven't had good luck with the 180 accubonds in the 300rum.  I went back to the Berger 168 for that reason.  tried several rounds over H1000, but need to try some with other powders.  What does Shawn load for the 338 Edge?

According to alwinearcher I think it was 89 or 90 grains of h1000 and a 300 grain smk. Not positive on that charge though. They are around 2800 fps as well.

I know the feeling They are spendy to buy, you buy a box of 50 and shoot 10 and they don't group well then they just sit If you are going to be shooting long range with the bullets I would really look into the minimum velocity is for expansion with what ever bullet you are shooting. I think the Barnes needs around 1900ft on there web site to open up well. If you shoot way out there, your bullet will be going less then the minimum velocity and they won't open. That is one reason I haven't got into Barnes more. They take a lot to get them open and at that far the speed just isn't there. The nosler accubond is one of the best that I have found.

Barnes and Berger are my two favorite bullets made. I will fill the ammo belt that is on the stock of my rifle sometimes with half of Berger Rounds and Half with Barnes. Since the POI is only an inch different between the two and I have the ballistics card laminated for both, I can adjust for range and wind very easily.

As far as Barnes are concerned.. yeah.. they are not and I would not use them past 500 yards.. they dont open up well when they slow way down. BUT.. for a bigger animal like a Moose or Brown Bear or Elk.. they put a great laser through the animal and if hit from the rib cage forward they will blow through any tough bone, hide and do the job.

Berger.. I would not use them on Moose or Brown Bear, everything else they are great for. They are incredibly unique in that they have a delayed ballistic tip like effect in the animal. Unlike a ballistic tip they do not shatter on impact rather they penetrate 2-3" and then blow up like hand grenade causing devastating damage. That is why, unlike other bullet shot at long range you see all those bang-flop kills on shows like Best of the West.

Accubond.. You can not go wrong. However, even when placed well, the animal seems to take a little while to go down. Now, this is my own personal experience as when I used them on a 6x6 elk shot at 360 yards.. it him perfectly in the heart, did not pass through and he continued to stand there, until I put one more in him to break his shoulder.

Each unto his own.. But I think the best Bullets out there come from Berger, Barnes and Nosler. The rest are just ok.
