removing rust from my guns
« on: June 29, 2011, 05:59:35 PM »
Hey guys, i had some guns passed down after my father passed away a few years back and would like to get them cleaned up.  I especially want to get this remmington model 1100 12 ga.  back to its original state or close to so I can use it this year.  Its not too bad but has some rust spots.  Before i start scrubbing away on it i would like some advice on this topic.  Thanks

Try using anything copper, penny or wool and use Flitz (SP) metal cleaner. That should do the trick, just dont us steel wool or sand paper. I cleaned up a 1100 with a silver reciver and got 95% of the crud off.  :twocents:

I have had good luck with 0000 steel wool soaked with rem-oil. I have never had to scrub so hard that I removed the bluing, but depends how deep the rust is. This works great with surface rust.

Since I found out about a product called Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner, I don't use 0000 steel wool and oil any more.  It melts the rust away, and doesn't hurt the bluing at all.  even makes cruddy old wood stocks look better.  A really great product for sprucing up an old gun.  Newer guns too, for that matter....
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Take a piece of brass.  Crush the open end in a vise, very very flat.  It will scape off the rust, without removing any blue.  Just use some gun cleaner after to remove the brass left on the gun.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

i will definately be trying some of these tactics.  I have a feeling one of my other shotguns is beyond rust removing,  quite a bit of pitting :'(.  maybe re-blueing?  dont know.
