Whitetail-Mule Deer Cross

Check out this buck. We think it was a cross. It had a whitetail tail but it was only about 3 inches long. This buck was with three mule deer does during the late whitetail hunt in the Huckleberry Unit. We took another buck---2nd photo-- in the same area the last day of the late season that was running with two mule deer does and a whitetail doe. It had a normal whitetail tail but the antlers were forked.

I'd say definitely a crossbreed...Whitey body with Muley gear.

100% whiteys to me.  I have many sheds from whiteys that split on one or several of the tines.  Doesn't mean it's a cross.

Lots of whitetails can have forks.  The face is all whitetail to me and the body color.  If the tail is whitetail I see no muley in there but those does might being carrying crosses.

Sounds like it could be a cross. You have to think that it may be a cross and the genes have passed through several times and over time the dominante gene wins. So with a crossbreed you will have traits that will out way others over time?

I know an outfitter up there he's being guiding for over 25 yrs and in the last 4yrs he has had a few of his clients get "Mule-tails",  units he takes his clients are Huckleberry, 49 Degrees, and Mt. Spokane.

Sure looks like a whitetail to me, at least from the one pic you posted for us. From that one pic I do not see anything that would suggest mule deer or mule/whitetail cross.

Here's a pic of the whitetail I took in Idaho this last fall. He is most certainly 100% whitetail but also has one forked tine.

I think it is 100% whitetail but sometimes it is hard to tell. Here is a confirmed mule/whitey cross.
