Pearrygin second deer

My hunting partner and I drew 2nd deer whitetail doe tags for Pearrygin during regular rifle season. I have never hunted the area before and he hasn't been there in 25 years. We are going to take a weekend to do a little scouting. Any ideas on where we should start looking?

I would start with getting a map (LC Sportsmap) of the unit and then call the Biologist. good luck to you and your buddy.

Lots of private land in that area. Get to know some land owners; now is the time to get permission.

tough one if you dont know the area. not alot of whitesy around. i also have the tag and know where a few hang out so thats where ill be opening day after we fill my daughters doe tag.

Those were some non-answer answers. Let me rephrase. Anybody here ever hunt that area that would be willing to start me in the right direction?

If I knew the area very well, I'd love to help you. What I do know is that 98% of the whitetail are going to be in the bottom which is 99% private land, hence the difficulty of that hunt. You need to get a map and try to find areas of state land that adjoin private bottom land and then try to figure out how to get to it. Talk to the biologist from the area, he will be able to point you in a direction, maybe even give you names of specific land owners that allow people to hunt. And then go over and start knocking on doors. Offering to buck hay for a day goes a long ways as well for some of those guys. Your going to have a hard time getting specifics from anyone when your first post is asking for spots, unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way.

Theare whitetail their not tons of them , and the majority of them our on private property. I've shot 4 whitetail deer in that GMU over my hunting career.  All came off private property. All my summer jobs growing up in the valley were fixing fences and changing irrigation pipe during the spring and summer. I keep in touch with them all still. If your going to look for access now is the time to do it.  Because come September when everyone and their brother start's asking alot of NO's are said.

When you make the right turn off the east chewuch road to go to the lake if you look over the river to your left that's where our land and cabin is which is the 218 unit. I have as many whitetail as mule deer. This winter I had 18 in my yard 90% of the whitetail will be found within a mile of the river and creek bottoms so look for public land there and stop by the WDFW office above pearrygin lake.

No ones gonna give you there honey hole just like i wont tell you where i know where some are at with the same tag in my pocket. People have gave advice now its time to do some leg work.

That's a nice whitetail buck from 224! So did you get your 2nd deer also?

Thanks. No, I passed on a doe the next day.  I already got an elk earlier this year and a guy can only eat so much meat. That doe tag was supposed to be insurance so I could hunt big boys on the late hunt. Guess I screwed that up.
