Deer Scouting
« on: July 03, 2011, 10:27:56 PM »
Anyone getting out there and doing some scouting for the season yet? I've been out and about doing my pre-scouting scouting. The snow levels are incredibly low, yet, so more than anything I've just been getting practice glassing for bucks.. not necessarily in the areas I'll be hunting! If anyone has some photos of bucks they've been peeping (perhaps not your whomper just in case someone else is eyeing him...) feel free to share scouting photos here!

...I'll upload a few once the camera charges... Unfortunately most of the photos through the spotting scope were worthless.  :dunno:

Happy scouting, all!

There's a few nice ones I'd love to keep my eyes on as they move further into the wilderness this season... here's hoping! We hiked in and overnighted... saw about 14 bucks last night and 2 bears.. one pig and one meduim sized bear that actually chased the larger one away. 5 nice bucks in a batchelor group and one lone whopper, and another nice sized buck with a small button buck... another group of 3 and a few smaller bucks with does. One two pointer that will be a whopper in a few seasons... he was WIDE. Lots of fawns this season, too... one momma had 3!  :yike: Overall, we saw three really nice 4 points with deep splits already; those and the large boar were the highlights of the trip... at least these green hillsides are good for antler growth since they aren't good for my allergies!

I have 2 spike bulls coming into my camera close to home, I usually take a cow during the late archery elk season, this year I drew the quality buck muzzy tag for the alta unit so scouting wont help me now , hoping for a good early snowpack this year.

Nice! There are some great bucks that come down pretty early in the Alta unit, too... found a masher of a buck completely stupid over does last year during that hunt... it saw us walking up this switchbacked road from above and still walked right down the hillside onto the road, towards us until it was roughly 10 yards away and then down the hill. Of course the camera battery was dead for that one.  :bash: Best of luck!

I have been scouting one day a weekend over here on the westside since the first of june.  Never knew how many bucks were actually in my hunting area pretty surprising.  Out of 50 does I have seen in the last 2 weeks, only 2 of them had a fawn pretty concerning, especially when we saw one of the fawns being chased by a coyote but we were 1400 yards away and could not do anything about it.

Its been a mixed bag over here... about 2/3 of the does I've seen do not have fawns in tow... but then there are does that are doing more than their share.. one in particular that had 3!  :yike: so in the end, I'd say its a push...  :dunno:
