Well it could be a small young wolf. Also the part about coming up towards your house makes me hesitate to say wolf, because they tend to shy away from anything human. But then again as stated before if it is a young wolf it could be curious. I think if you believe it was a wolf then it is. We are not there to see the tracks. What is the deal with the WDFW saying they are not on private property so they won't hang a camera? Do you have a game cam you can put out?

I had pictures of wolf tracks 2 years ago west of Republic. I took pictures of the tracks at the state gravel pit where they dump carcasses. Dana Base in Colville was given the pictures and was very excited as to where I took them. He stated to me the (WDFW) would like to put up trail cameras at that location. I told him where it was at and he said they (WDFW) only would put up trail cameras on private property. Why, you got me !

Campmeat I think these tracks may be dog, they are not as elongated or as big as wolf tracks usually are, I am also suspicious that they came to your house and followed the road so much. Dogs tend to do that. But like mentioned, maybe they are a young wolf, I would certainly put out a trail cam if you have one.

There is no mistaking that sound!  I had a game warden tell me a few years ago that I was just hearing my neighbors Hybrids!  My neighbors don't have any.  There are no homes where I heard these anyway.

Grizzly mt, Sit down area on the rez. I am going to get ahold of fish and wildlife and let them know. They was up there during the day so hopefully they was able to get some picts of them.

I gave brief update on the wolves last month at our grange meeting, used the Lolo herd as an example of what may and can happen.....I was interrupted by a lady who insisted we only have hybrids here, and that the Lolo/Yellowstone herd decline is largely due  to disease, not wolf predation.....

I live 10 miles south of Newport Wa.  I am right on the Idaho line.  I see tracks of and on here and hear them howling at night.  There is a Blanchard Area Road Management directly to the west of me.  Large area, no homes so no pets to howl.  Some of the locals say they have seen them also.  I was out looking for moose sheds about a month ago and noticed 2 sets.  Last year about this time I saw 3 sets following about a half dozen elk through my neighbors field.  No doubt on them being wolf.  The were as large as the elk tracks.

For Campmeat and anybody else finding a suspect wolf track.  Those tracks do look suspect only because they don't have the elongated two center toes.  One can narrow it down by following the tracks till they leave the road.  Every dog will wonder off the road for a while but come back again.  A wolf will leave and just start heading cross country.  If you follow the tracks a good long ways till you've decided he is not returning to the road you can pretty much count on it being a wolf.  The two short center toes is not a posative difference but trailing and discovering the habits increases the chance of it.  If Campmeat says there are no dogs in the area I would say he knows what he says and I would highly suspect it was wolves.  Like he said, they did leave the road which is another indication it was not dogs.  Dogs pee on the snow piles and stick to the road.  Wolves head across country.

I followed 4-5 sets of fresh wolf tracks today for ~5 miles on a road.  They even bedded there.  They had just come over from Idaho and were headed into the Pend Oreille Drainage.  It's likely a group from the Diamond Pack.

I also saw wolf sign (3-5?)  up north near Priest Lake- they were in WA but not by much. A freind in ID has been trapping hard and is hopeful to pick one of them out.

I was catching up reading some of your replies. Those tracks that I took pictures of in my yard look exactly like the wolf tracks is saw 1 1/2 weeks ago west of Republic. That's 30 miles from my house by highway miles. I've showed my yard pictures to hunters/trappers I know from around here and their consent is, Wolf. The tracks don't have the elongated toes like the pictures you normally see. ?? What else could it be, it's not a dog for sure.

When we hunted down by Swan Lake a few years ago (SW of Republic) we heard a wolf howling right before dark.

My friend found these fresh wolf tracks, it had snowed in the morning, 4 adult wolves traveling together in high remote country, Northport side (eastside) of GMU 105.
