rattling for blacktail
« on: July 11, 2011, 08:07:19 AM »
Hey guys- I'm a Blacktail rookie and was wondering if any of you have had success rattling in Blacktail bucks. I'm originally from Georgia where rattling can be very productive for bringing in whitetail bucks. Thanks for your input. :archery_smiley:

During the rut, rattling for Blacktails works very well. Look at Rasbo's avatar, he rattled that buck in.

 :yeah:
It can work very well but what I found is that you need to be less agressive than you do with whitetails.

I rattled in a nice buck last year. It was before the rut so I was not very aggressive like I would be during the rut. Rattling works best if you know there is a buck in the area; for example, you have seen one, pic of one on a trail camera, or see lots of rubs. The buck I rattled in last year I had pics on my trail camera and I saw several rubs in the area. In previous years I rattled in areas where I did not have pics of a buck and did not see any rubs. I had negative results rattling in these areas. There are a couple books on the market that discuss rattling in Balcktails.

I have never killed a buck while rattling but I have called in deer every time I have rattled.  about 50% of the time after I am done rattling and leaving the area I jump deer that were coming in to see what was going on.  Still learning but I have been successful in rattling in Blacktails.

one thing for sure you need to be where the big deer live inorder to bag them ... finding very fresh rubs means he is using the area and hanging out there is the key .. I cant count how many times I have sat on a rub line for hours in the morning & evening and returned in the middle of the day to find him lookin me dead in eye .. fresh rubs means dead deer as long as you have the patients to hang out and do not give up ...I think thats the biggest down fall guys have is going once and never returning .....Last year a buddy and I found mass rubs all within 1/2 square mile and three different grades had mass rubs on them which were all surrounded by clearcuts.. so we spent two days hunting these three areas and seen some doe but never seen mister big then on the 4 th day I stayed home and he went back that evening and the grade we checked at least 10x during our outing was now bedded 100yrds below the landing where we have checked so many times ...persistance payed off as usual ...

I've rattled in a bunch..... Mostly young bucks looking to see what's going on.... Just remember you'll need to sit longer and be very still...... And ready..... Most of the mature bucks I've rattled in have not been running right in..... More like a sneak in..... One step at a time..... One time Dad and I sat tight for 1 1/2 hours while rattling off and on with a bleat mixed in..... We stood up to move locations and less then 10 yds behind us a nice BT buck was just standing there staring at us...... He could've been there the whole damn time!!!!!! Got him at 25 yds while he was jumping over a stump.... Gotta be patient and if hunting with a buddy watch your backside!!!!

Be careful, you can rattle in other critters as well. I once rattled in a cougar while attempting to rattle in a big buck I had been watching in the same spot the day before.
