Maxi ball velocity
« on: July 25, 2011, 07:43:12 AM »
Spent some time at the range yesterday with H20Hunter's chrony.  For what it's worth, with 100g of Select RS powder the chrony told the following tale at 10 yards out of my Green Mountain LRH .50 cal barrel-

370 grain TC MaxiBall -  1480 fps
460 grain "No Excuses" Maxi - 1432 fps

I was expecting much more of a difference.  Might have seen a wider spread with more powder, but at 100 gr both maxi's are very accurate out to 100 yards, so I'm not looking to change it up too much.   Anybody else have similar/far different numbers?

I bet that 460g has quite a kick.    :yike:

I haven’t measured maxi-balls but here’s what I found with sabots:

Thanks for the info, CP.

It's noticeable, but not abusive - unless you don't shoulder that T/C Hawken buttstock correctly  :yike:
With the 460 grainer, it really starts getting a punch to it at about 120 gr of loose RS, no matter how you shoulder it.

I see you're in Everett - PM me if you want to try a few of these 460 gr maxi's for yourself in your rifle.

Thanks for the offer Skillet but I’ve found that my Bighorn likes the 300g sabots best and I’ve got them pretty well dialed in.

That's just part of my whole elk hunting process.  I find it a whole lot more of a fulfilling experience to have to shoot and then run to the side real quick to see where the elk goes while I'm reloading.  It's an aspect of hunting that modern and archery guys just don't really get to appreciate  :chuckle:
