Any good experiences with out of state guides?

I would like to hunt whitey or muley somewhere I could have a chance to see a reasonable amount of deer.  Don't want to shoot a domesticated buck on antleroids out the window of a elevated Winnebago.   Just a trustworthy guide that knows the lay of the land. Anyone been somewhere like that?  I'm thinking out of state and nothing too plush.

You need to contact Paul Ellis at Ellis Hunting Ranch in Pilot Rock, OR. He runs an up front, honest, working mans business. I have hunted with him off and on for about 10 years. It is a family business that runs off repeat clientel. If you hunt deer with him you will glass multiple bucks, when you glass them for 3 days you can basically pick which buck you want. He scouts year round, has awesome ground with great whitetail bucks and good muleys. You may not get a book buck, but the atmosphere and people make his outfit top notch! His WT bucks go 120-140 and his muleys are 20-26 inches with good mass.

I've gone on two different whitetail hunts on Anticosti Island (quebec).  It's not a "guided" hunt, but you are assigned to a "driver" who drops you off and then you are on your own for the day.  I had a blast up there both times I went(we stayed at the McDonald lodge).  You are allowed 2 whitetails per person, and you can hunt the rut.  Rattling and grunting works wonders and you will see a ton of deer.  I saw so many bucks in 4 days that I couldn't have kept track of how many I saw if I wanted to.  They tend to be short tined, so don't expect to see a booner, but there are some nice bucks up there if you are selective.

another thing to consider for a good out of state hunt and not wanting it to be guided is..get a landowner voucher..there are some great hunting to be had on these places

Thanks for the tips and great advice. I am planning for 2012 (can't even believe I'm typing that number), so I want to check some refs and what I can afford.   I have heard lots of good things about a couple of outfitters in Saskatchewan but Canada might be too pricey for the ol' budget.  I appreciate the help.

The place I mentioned is in Quebec and is half the price of a Saskatchewan trip.  Some of the packages start out in the low $2,000 range and that is with everything included.  Also, for that price you get to tag 2 bucks which not bad in my opinion.  It was even better when the exchange rate was in our favor a couple years back.  The additional cost for you would be flying to Mont-Jolie airport (quebec) from Washington.  It is definitely a fun trip, and one I hope to do again with family someday.

one outfitter that will down grade ya and not just myself with this thought is BattleCreek Outfitters here in Oregon the head guy there one year shot the clients buck for the kid because he couldn't get his scope on it so the owner of the outfit shot it for him. not something i'd look for out of a guide.

I can't believe the guide shot the buck for him. I wonder if he gets to sleep with the kid's bride on the wedding night?  I bet that was a great hunt to tell his buddies about at home.

Although I've only hunted Moose with this outfitter, I would hunt anything he guides for.  Comfortable camps and excellent guides.  When I was Moose hunting with him, 2 other guys in camp saw whitetails they judged in the 170's, both guys were amazed.  Check out his site.
