Do some hunting/exploring/hiking up and around the sedro wooly area. Just head out, look for trucks with gun racks, follow 'em.

I'm kidding about the following them part. Just get up and away, find some berries, do a lot of walking and exploring. You can learn quite a bit that way and may even stumble onto one.

Since your in Bellingham just drive toward Mt Baker & get in the low to mid elevation foothills that surround Baker this time of year. Check out old logging units with good reprod growth behind gated or abandoned roads the Bears will be there guaranteed. I've been hiking up high at snow level & I haven't seen any Bear sign up there yet. Good luck!

Calling may work but from everything I've tried and heard there are way too many berries around here so there's not much use for calling since their favorite food source is available almost all fall. Very early mornings and late evenings are about the only time they are out of the trees as it's usually really warm until October when your wearing a fur coat. I guarantee that if you go up any logging road (if there gated walk) or trail there's bears there. You just need to look around a little.
Take your kids into the outdoors. They are our future. Support conservation by joining and participating in future through NRA, SCI, RMEF, Wild Sheep or any of the other great organizations.
