bear calls????
« on: August 08, 2011, 09:30:31 PM »
Are bear calls effective? I would like to hear from you guys on whats effective and whats not. I bought a bear call and it doesnt sound like any real bear vocalization by any means and sounds different than the one on the dvd it came with. it sounds like a buck grunt tube. Would a johnny stewart predator call like rabbit in distress be an idea for luring in a big bruiser? Any info from veteran bear hunters would be great. Its great to have a resource like this site to exchange information.

Are calls effective in fall? My friend was thinking they are generally used only in spring, although we both don't really know (we're just getting into it). If calls are effective this time of year, generally which ones are the types to use?

Calls are effective at all times. It takes the right bear, at the right time with great conditions. Calling can be very productive.

That is what I have and my buddy has. He has the fx3 and I have had others but now have the fury. Most of my time bear hunting has been behind a caller. Our bear stands are 45 mins at the very least and up to 1.5 hrs in some spots. Elec calls are ideal for these long stands. In your area the Blacktail fawn distress produces well

My second year as a bear guide I ran 12 bait stations in Oregon.  We would stop at various spots on the way in to the baits and call.  That year we had 21 of 23 sucessful hunters and only three bear were taken off the baits.  All the others were called in using a hand tuned double reed Jack Rabbit call.  When feed is scarce and you are in the right location it is a great way to take bear.

It is also a good thing to use if your berry hole starts to get a little over grown for good shots.  A short blast will usually get them to stand up on their hinds for a better look and sniff.  Go right through their chest and take out the spine.  It's a sweet thing to watch!

Good luck.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Ive even had em come into pup distress using my howler.

Havent had any luck with bears yet on my spitfire, but I havent used it a ton yet. I like mouth calls too much.

Good luck! Rainshadow/RRcalls have been great for me.
