My truck motor blew up at 65000
« on: August 16, 2011, 12:44:23 PM »
2005 4.6 F-150    My dad was bringing it to San Diego when the motor let go. Turns out the #7 plug melted down into the cylinder and caused major damage to the cylinder.  Bad part is I bought the truck used with 5000 miles on it.
my 5 year warranty ran out a month before the blow up.. 7000.00 bucks later my truck is up and running with a completely new engine.........

guess it was my turn, still pisses me off that Ford wont pay for the new motor......

Did you call the manufacturer or just go off what the dealer said when you say Ford wouldn't pay for it?

I coulda got Dodge to pay for it easy if it were a Dodge.
Not a Ford/Dodge debate, just wondering. The Chrysler Customer Assistance people are a bunch of lay-downs. Were they factory plugs?

Ford Customer Service 1-800-392-3673
They might say no, but they might say yes too. It's worth a chance for $7k. The worst they can say is no.
It's tough when it's after the fact though. Always best to  call ahead of time.
Manufacturers are all about keeping customers happy and brand loyal right now. Chrysler is bending over backwards for people all the time. I just did a warranty heater box repair on a 2004 Grand Cherokee with 95k miles on it. It would have cost the guy $1200 or so, Chrysler covered it with $100 out of pocket to the customer for example.

I would be wanting to know why it burned a plug, not even Fords do that for no reason! Was it driven with an engine miss for a while before this happened? If you had a lean running problem (most likely) then you may still have it! I would expect that your new motor is wearing all of it's old fuel/egr system but if not then you should be good to go.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

FC,

I was told it melted the spark plug, then it got down in the cylinder eventually destroying the cylinder walls. My truck has always been taken care of.  never had an issue before this. only thing i know is my dad was driving it, and the o2 sensor light came on. Had it towed to the Ford Dealership and they told me about the plug. I am being told everything is new with the new motor deal, might have to check when i go pick up the truck.

I'd be amazed if everything was new...everything being injectors, EGR, etc. I'd assume that stuff got swapped over from the old engine.

As long as they didn't scavenge any fuel or egr system parts from the old motor I wouldn't worry about it. I would be interested to see if Ford will pay for this though, emission system components should have a 100k warranty on them and if they are not only not making it but are causing catastrophic engine failure at just over the half way mark they will be in even deeper than usual doodoo for the next few years.

@jackelope, I would too.

Emissions warranty will cover PCM and Cat Convertor. Thats it unless it's a diesel.
