called him in
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:45:51 PM »
my hunting partners for this year (my son and his buddy) came by the house last nite to shoot their bows in anticipation for this year's archery season.  My son's buddy, Rickey, showed me a pic on his phone of a bull he called in on Sunday.  I guess he was out scouting in an area next to the area we are supposed to be biking in on due to locked gates.  he was driving into the area and jumped a 4 pt bull off the road and drove past the spot a hundred yards or so......stopped his truck and walked back 60 yards and started cow calling...within minutes the bull came back to within 20 yards from him...he took a pic on his phone but it was pretty blurry cuz he was so excited...looking forward to hunting this area in a few weeks!

Well I'm buddies with Ricky & I believe there is some confusion lol. Did he tell you the herd was on the other side of the rd. He told me he whistled. Have a hard time believing his stories. He talks like he's the best bow hunter ever but yet to kill one lol. I think he's bs'ing ya ;)

This is exactly what you don't want to do! All you are doing is educating the elk.  :bash:
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.

Yeah, but I wasn't in my hunting area I was in yours... :P

Hard to blame someone for getting excited, testing out a new call and having some fun. But... >:(

I encourage those who want to practice to go to the National Park or some other area not open to bow or muzzy hunting.  We get about a day and a half of good bugling in my area before they all go quiet and the good bulls bug out to the Toutle.  With all the bull hunters in the Toutle this year they just might come back though.  I know.....wishful thinking.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Got a voicemail from a buddy that did the same thing.  Lives not too far from you.  Wonder if you were running together :dunno:

Yep thats educating a bull.  He will be less likely to come in during season. One of the things I really like about where I hunt.  Not too many people want to be there:)

:yeah:   I bugle from the house all the time and I always get a response from the guy down the road and vice versa.  Whenever I hear him bugling I go running to my garage for my bugle!  My wife thinks were idiots!  I've yet to actually meet the guy.  This has been going on for a few years now!

I practice from my house all the time, sure can be fun  :chuckle:.

Its funny, I have no problem going out and practicing in areas that have high pressure anyway. You should see all the guys running around blowing on there bugles around my place. Last year 2 weeks before the opener I was checking out a spot and had 8 different guys on the road blowing bugles and cow calls  in about a 400 yard streatch..... thing is I was right on the edge of the elk within 40 yards tucked away in a strategic location to observe the bulls  and not one of them responded to the calls  :chuckle: The elk and I were a good 400 yards off the road.  Hell they didnt even pay attention. The elk continued to do the elk thing and I snuck out at dark leaving the elk undisturbed. There is no way they could see the elk from the road . But there were some pretty horrific sounding calls  :yike: I dont think a coyote would have came in to them. I dont put pressure on my hunting spots, but the high traffic areas I really done care as the elk need blown out anyways before they get poached.

Back when I was out looking for fire wood on Aug. 20th. Called in 3 bulls and a herd of cows. I was smart enough to hide and not let them see me or smell me.

Bugle away my son, it's a free country. I'd do it, because I'd do it.

It is a free country, however if you plan on HUNTING in that area DURING season, it is not a good idea.
If you want to make it,
you can't fake it,
you gotta live it.
