With elk season coming in a few weeks and the posts that are being discussed I thought I would add few comments.
- When calling wait at least 15 to 20 minutes per stand after you have finished calling. Do not just call look around and move on within a few minutes of the initial call sequence. Many elk come in silent and it takes time for them to get to you.
- If calling from the mode of transportation that is noisy (Car, ATV, Motorcycle). Wait at 5 to 10 minutes with your transportation off an quiet to settle down before you call. Do not call from inside your truck. Get out walk away from your mode of transportation 40 yards before you call. Do not slam your truck door when you get out or in.
- Know your shooting zones and location for your initial shot prior to calling. I have been with people who call get a response then they start to think where should I set up? After the encounter is finished the comment of I had no shooting lanes usually comes up.
- If you are team calling have the shooter 80 yards minimal out in front of the caller. Having the caller close to you will cause the bull to stop short of the shooter because the elk is looking for their buddy. If they cannot see their buddy the game is over.
Good Luck
