What can a 6mm WSM do that a 257 Weatherby can't?

Kick its butt in the bc dept at equal or higher velos. We can all guess how high to hold on a ranged shot. I will take a slick wind bucker, since the field was open. I never feel handicapped with my Roy, but holding less windage is a good thing.

Me and a buddy are headed to unit 30, we got access to a bunch of private ground. There will be other hunters but lots of ground and lopes. We each have the one buck tag and 4 Doe tags. I will be getting back late the night of the 14th to be back for the modern opener. I will also be taking one of my handguns that has some range on it. I would like to shoot them all with it but if the right buck is 200+ yards the 270wsm will bark.

Also that is one fine lope you got! Did you score him? The only one I have shot in mt back in 2000 scored right at 79" a dandy. In wy with 10 tags to fill in 4.5 days I aint trophy hunting on this trip, first decent buck will get laid out with my handgun. Unless my big flirts with me past 200y then the short mag will get'er done.

Nope haven't gotten him scored. He was the only one I could get close to and it was the last night we were staying. We hunted for 2 days and killed 5 so you should do well. My dad, Chase Wing and Jessie Carr killed theirs within 500 yds of each other.

I'd love to have a 257 Wby.  We are going on our second antelope hunt this season, and if I can't sneak into handgun range, I'll be using my 25 WSSM upper on my AR again.  I didn't hear any opinions from last years antelope, but I don't think he liked it very well.

My wife will probably be shooting her old pre-64 243, son will be using his 270 again.  If we can get a load worked up for it, Dad will be using a 25/7mm that I built for him.  It should have identical ballistics to a 257 Wby, with MUCH cheaper brass.  If it works as well as I think it should, I'll build one for myself or my wife next year.

My dad, my buddy and I will be going to Wyoming Antelope hunting this year.  I will be using my M70 270wsm with a 140gr accubond, my buddy will be using his M70 .308 with a 165gr speer hotcore, and my dad will be using a marlin cowboy lever action in 38/55 with a 280gr cast bullet.

IMHO anything .30 or over is ridiculous.  These are small and don't need power,  Just reach.  i killed one at 450 yards with a .270 and I think that was overkill.

IMHO there is no such thing as over kill.  Dead is dead period.

Well, for a one time antelope hunt I,d feed my 270 some 130 BT,s or accubonds and go hunting. However if pronghorns were on the the list on a regular basis I,d get a .243 or 25.06.  :) :)

No 264 fans out there?  :dunno:

I'm currently building a .260 Remington and wouldn't hesitate to use it out to 400 + yards but for a dedicated antelope round I'd think the .264 Win mag would be close to perfect. Shoots a 130 grain bullet the same velocity as the 115's out of the .257 WB and BC of Berger's VLD hunting bullets are .552 for the 130 gr. 6.5's vs. .466 for the 115 gr. 25's.  The .264 shoots flatter and hits harder, what's not to like about that.

Carp,
I think you'll be surprised how easy it will be to fill those tags.  Hold out at least the first 2 days  :twocents:

I had at one time and have kicked myself for getting rid of it.  :bash:
A Winchester model 70, with a 26" shilen (sp) barrel in 25-06, shot handloaded 120 gr. noslers BT overlapping.  I would love to have it again.  had a 4x16  mildot and that could have been 6x24 or something like that and would have been about right.

Oh yeah I'm a fan, getting a load dialed in is a little more of a chore than other calibers, but once you do it's a great, fast, flat shooting round that will take out anything as far as you wanna shoot.  It's a great round that doesn't recive the credit due.  It shoot flatter and faster than a 270, but the down side is the heaviest bullet you can shoot is 140gr.  It is a sweet caliber, and a pleasure to shoot.
