Similar situation for me in the Eagle Caps in '88.  I let out my first locate call of the morning and get a response over by some other guys camp.  Sounds like a gut shot herford.  My hunting partner asked why we weren't going after him and I respond, "Those idiots over there are just learning how to bugle."  He responds with, "That's too dang bad for a person."  So off he goes after that awful noise and I sit down for a snack not wanting to waste my time chasing hunters.  Channon gets out about 100 yards and here comes this 280 class bull walking right toward him.  Neither see one another.  I let out a cow call and the bull nearly runs him over coming in to me.  Startles Channon so bad he drops the arrow he is carrying in his hand.  I screw the pooch and kill a branch trying to make a 35 yard shot.

We heard that bull bugle every day after that.  He never did sound any better.  Never could sucker him in again.  I tried every call in my bag, but he wasn't biting.  He may have sounded stupid, but he got smart in one quick hurry.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

practice at home, everybody with a call seems they have the need to blow them on every landing, and wide spot in the road..

:yeah:   I bugle from the house all the time and I always get a response from the guy down the road and vice versa.  Whenever I hear him bugling I go running to my garage for my bugle!  My wife thinks were idiots!  I've yet to actually meet the guy.  This has been going on for a few years now!

That sound fun!  :chuckle:

Go meet your neighbor. You may find you have quite a lot in common. You already share the elk addiction.

This was a great experiance and learning tool! This is exactly what I am talking about, although you guys where actually hunting and try to call this bull back after the elk was spooked he would not come back into bow range to a call. Now picture how many "hunters" call before the season and educate the elk  :dunno:  and how many guys do you hear year after year complain "the elk are tight lipped this year" "we can't seem to get an elk to respond to our calls"

Thank you for sharing your story and I hope this might educate some poster on here that don't think calling can have an ill effect when used at the wrong time. And that elk do not have a  memory!.
