I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

WDFW just posted this on their Facebook page.

Thanks for the post Kain....
I'm glad to see that WDFW is stepping up and helping hunters with grizzly bear identification.

I just saw two bear this week that on a quick glance (having taken the MT test every year for many years) appeared to be grizzlies. They disappeared before I had a chance to evaluate them for sure, but I am 75% sure they were grizzlies. They appeared to have concave or dished face, with lower hind end and taller front end on both. What is important, is that having taken the test I immediately noticed these characteristics and was trying to make a definite identification. I can see that these tests are definitely a good thing for hunters and for grizzlies.

I missed two myself.

This will be the first year Ive ever hunted bear, so it should be interesting. Any pointers?

I do like that the dept of fish and game has taken the time to establish these online tests. Very helpfull.

Prior to this all Ive ever seen is a black bear butt looking like a bowl of jello running away from me.

I went through the training portion before taking the test.  Scored 100% on the first attempt.  I printed the certificate even though I've never hunted in Montana.

Great link got 100% i will have the wife take tonight since this will be her first year hunting
with me. She was just asking me about this sort of test because we have a lot of bears and
a lot of color phase in the 204. She still thinks one of the bears on our cam might be griz, i
i think blond/black.

They forgot to mention the old way we learned to know for sure.  When encountering bears, if you climb a tree a hungry black bear will climb the tree after you.  A grizzly will push it over.   :chuckle:

Also you can tell from the droppings.  The Grizzly's crap smells like peperspray and is full of those bells they sell at REI.

Seriously though, In North America virtually every case of black bears attaching humans has been determined to be predatory.  Meaning the bear was going to eat the person it attached.  The way to keep a black bear from attacking you is to either shoot it in the vitals or don't look like food (I like to yell "Hey Bear!" if it's not hunting season)

I'm not 100% sure on the statistic for Grizzly bear attacks but my understanding is that the vast majority of he attacks were territorial but not quite all.  This seems to suggest that to avoid Grizzly attacks one might leave the area and not confront the bear.  If the bear seems intent on attacking being aggressive and fighting back may be the wrong move.
Such is life in the West and the further West the more the such.
