What's your thoughts on .257 Weatherby for deer?
« on: August 29, 2011, 09:18:36 AM »
I was looking at picking up one of the Weatherby Mark V in .257 Weatherby mag for deer hunting.  I wanted to see if anyone else is currently using one and what their experiences have been?

I don't shoot one currently but they will kill deer graveyard dead with high efficiency to extended ranges, great caliber.  :twocents:

Ask the guy with the name 257 weatherby on here.

I had one and loved it.  The only reason I got rid of it was the ammo was like $80 a box. If you reload then it's not a big concern. There's a few guys on here running them and they are flat shooting machines and really fast.

25-06 on roids.  I think it's true value used to be hurt by the bullets available in .257 (mostly designed for 250 Savage and 257 Roberts-type velocities).  With the higher quality bullets out, this is becomes a phenomenal deer cartridge.

If you reload, it's a great setup.  If not, it'll really hurt your wallet as jackelope noted.

I dumped my wby ultra light for a vanguard as it shoots soo much better. I have taken elk over 400 and deer a bit closer all with 100gr tsx's....they are the hammer of thor. Add a good dose of rl 22 and form from 7mm rem brass for a cheap flat shooter that takes a wildcat to best.

.257 Weatherby + proper bullet + proper shot placement = DRT (dead right there).

Next question?

You might want to let the game get out there a bit before taking the shot... :chuckle:

It's a great caliber and perfect for deer. Get a good bullet to run threw it and it will level any deer. I know a few guys that hunt elk with them and they do just fine. I have shot a 25-06 for years off and on and been around more then a few deer killed with them. The 257wby is just  faster and flatter.

25-06 is my favorite caliber, so I'm thinking .257 ought to be about the same.

I have one that I bought for wolf hunting in Idaho. My gun guy is a critical mofo. Got it sighted in a 200 yards. He said this gun is the "money ". I bought my ammo from www.grafs.com for $75. 2 boxes of Weatheryby 100 grn Hornady SP delivered. It's a tack driver for sure. Mine's the Vanguard from www.lowpriceguns.com. Can't beat their prices, cheaper than anyplace I found. I paid $424 for mine plus $9.95 shipping.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

A .257 WBY MAG in a Mark V is very hard to beat for a "Cadillac" deer gun.

A friend of mine was shooting one 3 weeks ago when we were shooting steel. He pulled that badboy out of the case and, OMG, was that gun beautiful. Beautiful stock, stainless fluted barrel and a brake on 'er. I'd be afraid to scratch it. He shot the 877 steel with it, that's when I decided,I WANT ONE, but got the Vanguard instead.

There shouldn't be much difference accuracy or shooting wise unless modifications are made, but it's just the classic appeal that sets the Mark V ahead.
