Westside muzzleloader Tag
« on: July 01, 2007, 09:45:37 AM »
Hey guys I deceide to stay on the westside for elk this year.  Anyone know anything about the wind river area for elk.  Of coarse I'd love a bg bull but I think up the wind it's either sex.  Anyone willing to suggest a good starting point or other helpful info?   Thanks

This is an either sex unit!  I'm going to try to find a map next week.  You guys know of any good maps?  Some of the maps these days really suck.

Not a ton of elk in the unit, but there are some dandy bulls that come from this unit.  They are hard to find though.  Starter areas I would check out are around South Prairie (6615 and 66 roads), and Big Huckleberry Mt (6801 road).  They take elk every year around these areas.  Drive around look for some sign ( old rubs, trails, etc.) then do some hiking.  They prefer thicker clear-cuts in the 10-20 year range, but you can find them out in the open early in the morning.  Once you find them they will not travel far until snow moves them out.  Good luck.

Creeping Death,

As far as the maps go....

www.topozone.com  has good topographic maps

www.mytopo.com  has really good customizable maps for sale that you can build on their server and then purchase.

And my all time favorite is google earth for satellite images that you can customize, email jpegs to yourself, then laminate and take in your backpack.

The combination of these is more than enough to give you what you need to get to know, short of first hand experience in that area.

I don't believe there are detailed maps of elk bedding areas and watering holes and such, like you can purchase in AZ or NM, for WA state.  To be honest, I prefer it that way, you will too if you find a honey hole.

For maps, these sights should serve you well.   The USGS is another good source, but some of the maps they have are really old and outdated, especially for the West side.

Good Luck,

Please wear bright colors. As to not get shot at by all of the idiots that shoot and brown, and ask questions later...
That is one of my least favorite units because of the either sex part of it. Lots of stories about people shooting multiple animals because they shoot into a heard of cows and then not see any go down and keep shooting... It is a sick seen sometimes.
