tough call
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:36:08 AM »
I was planning on hunting elk this weekend near Ellensburg but now I am not sure. A buddy of mine was going to go tag along and watch but ended up canceling at the last minute because of a funeral. Everybody else I know will be hunting around the state so my big concern is that I won't have any help if I were to get one down. I am not as much worried about the evening time as I would have all night to get it out in the somewhat cool temps but if I shot one in the morning I would be screwed. I don't know what to do...  :dunno: :bash:

Go hunt, that's what you do. Figure it out.

I would still go. If you get one down, you'll figure out a way to get it out.

Just don't hunt too late in the morning.

I agree, go hunt. Maybe you will notice a few other hunters in the general area. Mention you are solo, feel them out, chat them up. Maybe offer a quarter if they are willing to help pack one out. Maybe offer to do the same? Bottom line for me is if I have a chance to get out and hunt, I hunt.

That is a great offer and I am more than willing to throw in some steaks and whatever a guy wanted if I did get one down!  :cue:

You're a stand-up guy, Beginner. Were I in his shoes, I'd be sending you a message. This is a great forum.

i have no experience at all with skinning/gutting/ whateveryoudoafterthekill,..  lol   but i can definately do my share of hauling.  if its on a weekend,.. i can definately get out there.  all i really want is to see first-hand and experience what to do after the kill,  i've never hunted big game,  but i would jump at any opertunity for a learning experience.   shoot me a P.M. if you need help.  also,  weekdays on evening should be fine too.  my wife will definately understand this "emergency"  lol  :chuckle:

This site is amazing! So many people ready and willing to help a fellow hunter out. For all that read this thread, this is the way it should be and also want everyone to know that I too am always willing to come and help anybody pack an animal out if needed.

I'm right there with biginner. Go kill an elk and then send me a PM. I have pack boards and would help you pack anytime. I shot a bear August 5th and ran into two guys that willingly helped me pack it out without even hardly having to ask. It's what we do as hunters. I expect a PM sometime soon. Go hunt!!!!

My friend killed a bull on an 80 degree day 3 years ago. He  was solo, the bull was 1.5 miles from the road and he's 5'7" and about 140 pounds and he got it out by himself without losing any meat. I woulda been there in an instant to help but it was my daughter's 1st birthday and he was +/- 3 hours away. Bottom line is it can be done, just know your limits.
