Winston Creek Question
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:07:48 PM »
With all the High Fire Danger closures and looking at the map what part of the Winston creek section from the North end is closed? I scouted it out last week and pick a couple of locations behind the gate where I wanted to go and sounds like its closed off the 500, can some one advise Please? I may need to make new plans tonight as I'm leaving tomorrow......

You'll have to identify areas that are DNR which are pretty limited.  Check out the GoHunt map feature on the WDFW website for help with finding DNR blocks.  I'm going somewhere else instead pending a change in the Weather.  Not good.

I just called the Weyerhaeuser access hotline. Wow! They just updated it today and the St Helens tree farm is now entirely closed for hunting due to fire danger. I'd probably give up on Winston for now. I'd head for National Forest land, I think. But I don't have to worry, since I have a modern firearm tag this year. I feel sorry for those with Toutle and Margaret archery permits.

Yeah so do I!! I didn't get drawn for tag this year thank the Lord. Looks like I might hit  parts of Mossy and maybe out near Cinebar? I was told that there were a few elk hanging around. Just meat hunting this year hopping to get into some thing, we'll see......don't know what to do as of now.....

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but what I got out of the Weyerhaeuser message is that ALL recreational access is closed, meaning even the "public access corridors". If so, this means if you have a Toutle permit you cannot get to the state land. So basically the entire Toutle unit is not accessible. The Winston is about the same, with Weyerhaeuser and Port Blakely lands being closed- that's probably about 99% of the Winston unit.

No hunting on Weyerhaeuser. At all. In the St. Helens tree farm anyway. I didn't listen to the message for the other areas, but I assume they're all closed.
