I might possibly be the worst hunter in the history of hunting
« on: September 10, 2011, 11:29:05 AM »
I like to say I learn something everytime I go hunting.  Today, not only did I learned that if I don't have the gas to go where I have seen elk sign and talked to elk in the past, to not bother going, but I learned that I also might possibly be the worst hunter ever.

Went to a new area today, closer to home to save gas.  In hind sight, I actually WASTED gas.  Heard one bugle at about 6:30, thinking about it, it was probably another hunter.  Bugle sounded a couple miles away and I couldn't tell the direction it came from.  Saw 0 elk tracks, saw 0 elk poo, saw 0 deer poo, did see a few deer tracks (small) and 2 piles of bear scat (few days old), and to top it off, Weyerhaeuser came by AFTER I drove into their land (green dot gate) and locked the gate for fire danger, locking me in, with no cell service.

Well, it could have been,, like this...

You hiked in several miles behind a locked gate.. then Weyerhauser opened the gate about noon and let the trucks in behind you..   as is typical for them.. :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

One reason I do not hunt Weyerhauser for elk anymore...

But as Runamuk said... you spent the morning in the woods.. that is a good thing.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

You're not even close to being the worst hunter. A while back Wea300Mag & I took a guy WT hunting around Colville/Ione area & the 1st day we were 1 hr late getting to my spot because he was in gas station asking everybody where's the deer, About 11:ooam I noticed him walking through the reprod wearing brown Carhartt jacket with no orange, Then later his pwr steering pump broke, He had no tools but I did  So we drove around in my Truck looking for a new steel line so we could replace the stripped one that he didn't fix before going on 6 hr hunting trip.P.S he's from Sedro-Woolley, :tung: Left his wallet in store twice & had to go back & get it,Locked keys in his truck & busted passenger window trying to unlock door,Then went home next morning bitching about how WT hunting sucks. :dunno: :chuckle:

First and foremost there are no green dot roads on Weyerhauser land.  Second, just because a Weyerhauser gate is open does not mean you can drive thru it.  Again people this is simple, call the hotline, select the area that you are in and LISTEN to the message.  Since August 1st. No vehicle access has been allowed due to fire danger.  If there are non Weyerhauser employees behind Weyerhauser gates they are breaking the rules as of August 1st.

That is not entirely true.  Weyerhauser did give access to youth and disabled cow elk permit holders in the St Helens tree farm area in August.  They gave the permit holders the combinations to several locks on select gates.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Runamuk you are absolutly right and I am wrong; however last year these signs were not posted during the early archery season in the Saint Helens tree farm area I was hunting.  My point is the hotline has to be utilized had he called the hotline prior to his trip every day he would have none that the area was closed to vehicle traffic, and as I said before just because a gate is open does not mean it is open for public access.  This is mandatory this time year with the heat, and knowing they close these areas every year.  Unfortunitly the green dot sign had not been change in his situation.  There are ways to determine the out come you just have to utilize them ALLLLLLL, yes a pain in the rear but very necessary up there.

true but if you read the signs posted at the gates and are newer to this whole thing you would not think to call the hotline.....just saying it has taken me 3 years to figure out some of this stuff because it is not readily apparent.  I understand why some people get very frustrated with all of it.  I just try not to go anywhere I dont already know unless I am with someone I feel confident in.... :dunno: makes it slow to find places to go but I dont risk trespassing or being in some closed area etc....

as stated earlier in the thread, I was told it was Simpson land, not Weyerhaeuser

I think most of the Simpson land is in the Margret unit.  Runamuk, I hear ya this is just such a issue every year it makes me wonder if there could be a easier way to notify individuals where to access.  More infomation needs to be included with special permit packets, and Weyerhauser property.  They complain about the elk tearing up there tree farms but make it complicated to enter there areas.  It could be easier for sure.  I am just very big on scouting, and figuring out all there is to find out about an area so I give my self a better chances. Green dots, red dots, signs, hotlines, no access, foot access, just ends up causing people to do things they are unsure of.
