HIP DYSPLACIA
« on: September 13, 2011, 04:03:30 PM »
I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION,..  FOR A COUPLE WEEKS NOW I'VE WATCHED MY DOG HAVE A VERY "UNIQUE" WAY FOR WALKING, AS IF ITS UNCOFORTABLE FOR HIM TO MOVE HIS HIPS...  I KEEP WORRYING THAT HE NIGHT HAVE HIP DYSPLACIA,  :dunno:   BUT I DUNNO.  I WANT TO GO GET IT CHECKED OUT,..  SO FAR IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT CAUSES HIM ANY PAIN AT ALL, AND HE HAS NO TROUBLE AT ALL RUNNING/SPRINTING OR JUMPING. (CLEARS A 4 FOOT FENCE EASILY)   I ALSO THOUGHT THAT IT MIGHT BE THE FACT THAT HE HAS SUCH MUSCULAR THIGHS THAT MAKE HIS WALK LOOK AUKWARD,  :dunno:  I'VE NEVER SEEN A WEIMARANER WITH SUCH HUGE THIGH MUSCLES.  :dunno:

MY QUESTION IS,.. IF HE DOES HAVE HIP DYSPLACIA,.. IS THERE ANY TREATMENT FOR IT?  OR JUST PAIN MEDS?

I WAMTED TO STUD HIM OUT IN THE FUTURE (MAYBE 2 YAERS OR SO) BECAUSE I WANT A PUP FROM HIS BLOODLINE AS MY NEXT HUNTING PARTNER AND I WANT A PUP TO GROW UP HUNTING WITH MY KID.  BUT IF HE DOESN HAVE HIP DYSPLACVIA THEN I WILL HAVE HIM NUETURED.

There are levels of dysplasia from extremely mild not needing treatment other than restricting stair climbing and jumping...to extreme requiring surgery and in some cases euthanasia.  the only way to know for sure is to go have the hips xrayed , he may just be a funny mover....

i think that he might just be a funny mover too,....  but i would definately have him checked before studding him out.   when i just got him he had a problem of running off, so i always had a long check cord on him,  he wore the check cord for about 2-3 months,  so i think he developed his funny walk by having to walk weird to avoid stepping on the check cord  an dpulling on is own neck..  :dunno:

sometimes my female moves funny when walking at certain speeds. Her hips came back good. To have the hips certified costs a bit more but, an experienced vet should be able to just do xrays for about $150 and tell you if something looks funny.
