Bird Dog Vet - Vancouver area
« on: September 21, 2011, 12:39:26 PM »
I'm looking for some recommendations/advice on Vets for my new hunting partner. This is my first bird dog(not dog, just "bird" dog). He is a Black lab with an extensive Master hunter and Senior master hunter background. Everything I read says I should take him to a vet that knows performance/hunting dogs not just the vet on the corner. Similar to an olympic athlete receiving personalized health care. I am all about this and want my dog to get the best treatments, etc. I also want a vet that knows you can't just jab a needle in anywhere on a performance dog.

Anyone know a vet in the vancouver area that specializes in this type of thing or this breed?

If something goes wrong like you a blow a knee yes, I'd say you need specialized care. Otherwise, your vet isn't going to do anything differently when giving shots and checking their ears for wax buildup. Just go to whoever is cheapest. That is the bigger thing to search for in my mind. Find the best vet possible only if you have a specific serious problem. Otherwise, shots and checkups are all the same just some vets charge WAY more than others for the same service.

(Built4Outdoors) – I also have a black lab, along with a brittany spaniel.  Both dogs are 7 years old and have been hunting since puppies.  I take them both to see Dr. Burton at the Evergreen Animal Clinic near the Hazel Dell area in north Vancouver.  My in-laws have always had black labs and they have been taking their dogs there for years.  I know how difficult it is to find a vet which you’re satisfied with, so I thought I would try to help.  From what I hear it sounds like a lot of other hunters take their dogs to the Evergreen Animal Hospital as well.  PM me if you have anymore questions. Good Luck!
