Some Sturgeon Today
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:14:49 PM »
The day started off good. 2 fish right away then it quickly died off. The weather was obviously warm but with the cover on the boat it was manageable. In the afternoon some wind picked up and we left. Here are some photos. Thanks to Mike, Kevin and Wayne.

Great guys and good time on the river for sure today.  Got to add a couple pictures to show the action as good as it was in the middle of the day.  Ray with Fish, Ray Asleep, Wayne Asleep...  Funny..... Told you hot action during mid day....   The morning started off excellent, 10 minutes from putting out rods fish on...  Then several bites then fish on....  Curse of Kevin hit us and not another fish hit almost all day????  (Everytime he touch a rod, fish quit biting and he was next to bring one in....)  Everything was calm till about three then the winds from the bowels of hell connected and blasted us pretty good on return, I think the first time I actually dip the front under a wave, a bit scary but kind of fun too....  Under bridge was big rollers coming at an angle.  Anyhow, is there a launch up river that some of you might use.  Found one, but I think my boat is too wide to squeeze through posts out in the water. And some butt plug had the whole ramp blocked with his truck and Jet Ski trailer, good thing we didn't need to use it....  Anyone fish near Longview, anyone ever fish for Sturgeon there?  Saw quite a few people fishing off shore for them on return home?  Had surf type rods?  How bout Cowlitz anyone been doing well there for Salmon or Steelhead?

Yes, the successful fisherman were waiting for the other two guys to reel one in. As you can see it was not an exciting wait  :dunno:

We launch at either deep river (wa side) or john day on the other side.  I've done the marathon run back to the lower launches in that afternoon wind.  No fun at all.  Very seldom do you get a good run back.  That's why we launch above.  You get to run with the waves.  Not a great ride, but better than bucking em.

Bull Canyon, How far up is the Deep Creek launch?  Thinking next time giving it try, for gee whiz purposes and need a back-up in case of bad weather... Watched several other boats running that way everytime, but just haven't explored or followed like I should have...

We use the John Day ramp for the gals when they have to use the bathroom. I was told by F&G that if we launch on the Oregon side we have to have Oregon licenses so I always launch here. Have you heard otherwise?

You can launch from either side with either license.  I've been checked over there and they didn't bat an eye at my wa license.

Looked to me like you were fishing within a couple miles of deep river.  It pops out right at rocky point.  I believe it is 8 miles from the bridge.  I may be mistaken though.  If you come down through Cathlamet.  You'll go over deep river and than there will be a left on the other side of the bridge. It's just east from Naselle a short ways. Small windy little road.  Not bad though.  Launch isn't nothing special, but you can launch your boat there.  John day is a much better launch, but that is a whole new game over there.  Not a bad one, just new.  Easy to figure out.  Plenty of boats that give a guy an idea where to start.  If you need it I can get you the number for the bait shop so you can have bait ready in the am.

If you saw folks plunking near Longview, they were probably after some summer run steelhead.

Looked to me like you were fishing within a couple miles of deep river.launch,

Portuguese Point.

The main reason I use Chinook is I generally stay the night and just get a transient slip so I dont have to worry about towing the boat all over town after we get back in. Much easier to hit Ilwaco or Astoria and find a parking spot with just the truck. Makes it nice in the morning too, having it in the water and ready to go, kids can be distracting in the morning and I tend to forget some things when checking for the pulg, putting on the top, unhooking the straps, laoding the gear from the car, launching, pulling up the ramp and parking etc, all while answering non-stop questions by my 4 year old. :chuckle: Never fails, something is always left behind, most of the time its my sun glasses :bash:

Speaking of left behind, got my boat home from the lake yesterday and pulled a bunch of stuff out of it found myself a nice camo coat and green T-shirt. I would imagine one of you guys are going to be going nuts looking for this coat in a couple months as hunting season starts. Its large enough for me to use as a tent so unless someone claims it I will try cabelas for some new poles and stakes :chuckle:

Man, if they were after Steelhead, they were using surf rods, wow...  Either way, just didn't know what they were after...   It was too cool the kids were jumping off the bridges into some smaller rivers/creeks, heck thought about stopping and joining them--- it was hot...
