Toutle Bull Tag
«
on:
October 03, 2011, 10:49:47 AM »
Got drawn for a toutle bull tag this year. Went down on saturday (0ct.1) Seen a lot of people around the 4100. Ended up seeing a group of 6 cows and one 3x3 bull. Closest we could get was 250 yards. A little too far for a open sighted muzzle loader lol. Hunted all day and that was the only elk we saw. Didnt hear any bugles at all. Any one else having better luck than me down there in the toutle??

I have been scouting down there 6 times now and I dont think I have ever seen so many elk including some nice big bulls. I have a mod cow tag. Should be a great year.

We were there this weekend but with cow tags and definately saw more people than elk. We saw 6elk on the opener, a 4x4 a spike and 2cows and 2 calfs. Couldn't get a cap on before the bull lead them away. Cut them off in the trees 10 minutes later and the cap wouldn't fire twice, put a new cap on and the last elk into the opening was a spike. The next morning we had a nice 6x6 a spike and 15 cows cross the 4100 in front of us, it was shooting hours but still to dark to get a good shot so we followed them into the trees and pushed them to somebody else who got a shot and we never saw them again. I was hoping to see more elk than we did but we did have our opportunities so I can't complain. We stayed in the north half of the unit all weekend, maybe the south was better.

I think we are heading down on wednesday to do some hunting. Hoping we can get down there and find some elk "BULL". zach if your not busy you can come along. I gotta round up some extra gas money but that shouldnt be too hard. "Its not every year that you get drawn for a bull tag" lol. Congrats on getting a nice buck man!!

I was down in that area doing some light scouting for deer earlier this year after fishing for some steelies. Seen several groups of elk and one monster elk which had me drooling. You should be able to get into them. Doubt they will be bugling with our current weather, but try cow calling. Its worth a shot...

Man, you guys really need to get off the 4100. If I had that tag the only time I would be near the 41 is going in when its still dark to get where I am going to hunt, in fact I wouldn't even hunt out of toutle, id be going in from Kalama, up around Elk Mountain. Idk if the gates are locked but if that state land is the only place you can get in to for the Toutle then get up there around that 3000 you do like the other guy said and get in the timber.

Well ended up gettig this guy yesterday evening around 4:30. Spotted him with another spike and 5 cows off on a ridge about 2 miles off. My uncle and I were able to hike around and i was able to make a 194 yrd shot successfully filling my elk tag for this year. I was hoping for bigger but any elk is a trophy in my book. This is my 3rd bull and my 1st muzzle loader bull so far. Hoping everyone else is having a good year of hunting!!

Good job
200 yds with a smokepole is a pretty good shot with iron sights
