Dayton Whitetails

I know there are both whitetail and mulies in the Dayton unit, I know the Nat'l forest land is at higher elevations where mulies hang out, but is there a good whitetail population in the Nat'l forest to the east and to the south?  Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes actually I see more whitetails up high than mulies.  Take the road to bluewood or skyline and you will find some nice areas to hunt.  It's hit and miss, don't know any places where I see them constantly.  Good luck!

Thanks guys, I have spent  a ton of time in Tucannon, I know that area well, but I drew a whitetail doe tag in Dayton, and as you know, there is a ton of private land so its tough to get started.  I have driven all over that unit looking for "feel free to hunt" land, but there is not much.  I have been on skyline, but only saw mulies, but will try again.  Thank you so much for your responses.  Quality individuals on here.

You got a doe tag?!  I would head up patit cr rd and hunt the feel free to hunt land right past the Lewis and Clark monument. Tons of whitetails there!

You say there are whitetails along skyline, is it mostly down lower on skyline, up in the nat'l forest, or both?

I hunt skyline rd and there are both mulies and whitetails below the nat'l forest. Keep an eye out they are there. You should'nt have a problem getting a doe.

How did it go?

We headed up there, spent the day along skyline.  It was foggy throughout the day, but we hunted several areas, walked in as far as we could in the "feel free to hunt", until it was "posted", and saw 8 deer total probably about a mile away (through glassing).  We saw over 100 vehicles with hunters in them.  in one little draw we saw 10 "oranges."  One of the local ranchers said last week some cougars were roaming those hills, they even killed a deer infront of a garage of a house.  Good area, but the fog made for a trying hunt.
