Scent for Black tails
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:04:36 PM »
So ive been hunting these mystic creatures for quite some time now and have not used much in the way of scent other then a scent block.  any good products out there or any advice when trying to get up on these guys or just flat out not letting them smell you.

I always play the wind to my advantage. left to right , right to left, or in my face. Never to my back, as you will lose that game every time. I use Scent Shield, Dead Down Wind, And Primo's products when it comes to scent elimination. Wash your hunting clothing in unscented detergent and don't use fabric softeners that smell.

I've always wondered this myself.  Why do all these sporting goods stores sale Whitetail doe in estrous scents in blacktail country, I tried some when I was younger, but all I got was warning snorts.  Maybe I wasn't using it right, Idk, I just play the wind in my favor on still hunts now.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

i have read that raccoon cover-up scent works. that way WHEN they hear you plowing thru the think brush they will think you are just a rascally little coon.

Just be aware of the wind,  there are very few places in Wa. that don't have some human scent, so just make sure they don't get a good whif of you and they won't pay any attention to you.  Deer have a great sense of smell,  they can smell you from far away,  it's when they can smell how close you are that you have a problem.

I like to wash my clothes in Scent Eliminator then collect some of the foliage from the area you are hunting and store your clothes with it for a week. Leaves, Pine bowes, grass... ect.  Then hunt the wind..  A good wind Detector is a must.

Washington blacktails cannot resist Moccasin Joe's blacktail estrus. Comes in a white bottle and I think a green label. Can usually only be found at small local sporting goods stores. Good luck!!

Wind!!!!!! Wind!!!!! Wind!!!!!!!

There was an article in Field and Stream not to long ago about the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of scents and scent masking devices. I usually wash all my clothes in a UV dampener/scent remover and then run through a second time with nothing. Followed by air drying (Dryers ALWAYS smell like fabric softeners). I do use the Moccasin Joes on my boots and will put it along my trail to my blind or the general area that I am hunting (I prefer to stalk rather than sit and wait).

The key for me is to eliminate the sources of additional scent. I know that I am going to stink up the place, but I don't get all metro-sexualed up by wearing Axe body spray, use shampoo or conditioner and I NEVER shave.

It has already been said, but the WIND is the best way to eliminate the remaining scent that you have on ya. If it's at your back, then all you are doing is going for a walk in the woods with a boom stick, and you ain't hunting!
