I know they were doing what needed done, and protecting the public......but, when the wolves escaped in ohio......is it not protected by fed law?  It is afterall a wolf.

No, the ESA and the protection it affords is only applicable to animals in the wild.  Threats to public safety are also exempt

Same with the grizzly bear, it had not demonstrated that it would attack and kill humans, so why did it need destroyed?

Not sure if they did or not, but when it comes to public saftey as it did in Ohio, there should be a grey area that allows our LEO's to protect.  I would rather read in the paper wolf shot by trooper, than child killed by wolf.

Forgot to say one more thing, these animals have lived in capativity for some time, and I bet they have little to no fear of man, and will act differently than your actual wild animal

I agree, but where is the outcry from PETA and Defenders of Wildlife on this one?  Had any of these animals threatened humans, or were they just gonna live out their lives as the wild animals god had meant them to be and never harm a hair on anyone's head?  Heck, all the animals had probably had a meeting prior to being set loose and decided to go vegan and live out their lives in Ohio.  I heard from an unnameable source that the Bengal Tiger had already met with a travel agent and had booked a freighter ticket to India to go home and visit his folks.  The grizzly and the black bear had already talked about doing an inner species "thang" to keep their families alive.

i dont understand why they had to kill them though, a tranquilizer dart, and off too a zoo you go, why in sam hell would you have to kill a giraffe, they must be blood thirsty carnivores, i believe that whole mess was handled with absolute carelessness, i can understand taking out the grizz, wolf, but they should have tried trank darts first, and the tiger was killed by a vehicle so there wasnt a whole lot antone could do about that, but they went total peter capstick on those critters when they should have been doing there best to capture them and when that didnt work then take them out.

I beleive in the news story they opted out on the tranqs becuase of upcoming darkness.  I guess they dont have hounds in Ohio

I believe they did try to dart the tiger, and he ended up going all PCP, and ran in front of a car and got killed.

Animal tranquilizers and dart guns are probably few and far between, and I believe it does take some special skill to use them.

The whole thing was a sad mess

They are not as easy to get ahold of as you think, very few people also know how to use them without killing an animal. And yes, most of the animals would probably go hay wire and run out in traffic when shot.

I was reading a story on CBS that was talking with Jack Hanna.  He said they had 4 tranq guns.   It was getting dark and the animals were moving off the property.  It takes anywhere from 3 - 10 minutes for the drugs to take affect.  Most times when tranq'd they run off or lash out.  He said that at first he was upset with what LE was doing but when it was explained what they were up against he understood the need.  The story went on to say they did tranq one tiger.  It started to calm down and then boom --bum rushed the vet and deputy.  The deputy wound up having to drop it. 

Didn't know that there were giraffes.  I thought all the animals were dangerous or public health threat ie the monkey had Hep B.

Didn't see/hear about giraffes either but there were like 16 tigers plus lions and cheetahs and the bears.  I saw a live captured griz on the news so they didn't shoot that one.  I think there were only one black and one griz bear.

Good job on law enforcement for getting the problem taken care of in a timely manner!
