Good unit for my first elk
« on: July 06, 2008, 02:19:37 PM »
Could anyone tell me a good unit to look at for my first elk during archery? I have hunted elk when I was younger but never got one. I would like to get a bull but would settle for a cow.

I've been thinking about 249 alpine but it doesnt look like I will be able to scout it any. I know 364,352,356,340 pretty well but I always see none legal elk (bulls) during the season. It has been around 10 year since I have gone out for archery though so maybe my learned hunting skills will help :dunno: I have hunted 388 for deer and seen alot of elk sign, is that unit anygood or is it over run??

idk. i only know 328, 335, 336, 340. they are all good units for elk, with good access aswell. lots of hunters though, but you can still find areas that get you away from people.

First of all, don't "settle" for a cow, there's no such thing as "just an elk".  Any elk you can put your tag onto is a trophy, especially with a bow.

As for the best units to try, look at Manastash, Nile or Bumping.  Lots of elk and if you want to be away from people, try scouting some hike in areas in the Wilderness.
hey, where's Professor Chaos? Anyone seen him?

Pick a unit that you like and get to know it well. Spike only for archery is a tough hunt. Hunt one that has bull draw, get to know it now so that when you do draw your odds are increased on seeing bulls. Theres elk in all the areas listed, they have been hunted for generations and are smart. I've hunted bumping ( 356 )and it sucks, I have no idea why I am going in there again this year & the next & the next. :chuckle:
