Mock Scrapes
« on: July 07, 2008, 11:51:34 AM »
Has anyone tried using mock scrapes for either mule deer or blacktail?  I’ve used them with some success for whitetail but I’ve never tried them for mules or BT.

I've had some success with Blacktail although it isn't as effective as with whitetail.  Try around some filberts.  I've noticed alot of rubs against the filberts and an occasional scrape.

I've been using mock scrapes for about three years now.  With whitetail the bucks don't seem to really paw at the ground until mid November.  I see mostly does pissing in them during the November modern firearm season.

Mock scrapes do make the season longer for me.  I start mine in August with a full drip bottle.  They should still have scent in them in November.

Good luck and have fun.

so if they don't start until november than why would you start mock scrapes in August?  Just wondering your reasoning behind this.

Better to start early then late.  I like to influence their travel pattern before they establish their Territorial pattern themselves.  In other words you can't start a mock scrape too early, but you can start one too late.

What's a filbert?

American Hazelnut.  They grow all over this area like a weed.

I went into an area last night and found both scrapes and rubs on filberts along a vacant road.  I also saw evidence of a cat pawing at the trees at about knee high.
