Huns and Roosters
« on: November 24, 2011, 07:50:39 AM »
Finally had a good trip this season near Notellum Lake.  Tent camping in the snow, lots of birds, great times.  If only all my trips went this well.

I dropped this rooster at 50-60 yds. with a 2.5" paper fiber wad load of 1oz. 6's.  Birds were flushing wild.

Another 50+ yd shot downed these in my 1880's 16ga hammer gun.  1 oz. 6's.

Thats really cool.   I LOVE the older weapon choice and the "grass roots" bird hunting.   That says alot for tradition, history, etc.   Thanks for sharing your hunt with us.

Thanks.  I know it's not for everybody, but hunting with older weapons really adds to my enjoyment of the sport, and I find them to be just as, if not more so (with the right loads), effective than modern weapons.  Self-imposed limitations can make success that much more sweeter.

Great pics.  Is that a ruffed grouse I see in there too?

Yes, that's a ruffed grouse I found in a brushy side hill.  Totally unexpected.  I hunted with a few other friends and we got huns, roosters, quail, a couple chukars and my grouse.

The guns are a 1896 vintage 6.6lb Syracuse Lefever GE (ejector gun) 12ga with 30" damascus barrels, choked sk/f, and an 1880's vintage 6.9lb Husqvarna mod. 44 16ga hammer gun with 31" damascus barrels choked m/f.  The Husky is a very rare gun, the only one of its kind I know of.  Swedish Husky's are excellent guns, and they were made into the 40's.    I shoot 1 oz loads in both guns, so the 12ga is effectively being used as a 16ga(it's lighter than many other 16's I've owned as well).  Both shoot like a dream and hammer birds.  I've even taken to calling the Lefever my "meat stick."  I refurbished the wood and metal on both (I do it for a living).   Pm me for more info if interested.

Great pictures. I especially like the one of your dog with its head poking out of  the  tent. Is it an English Setter?

Gun Porn... damn those are gorgeous weapons!!!!  nice looking dog too..
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Thanks everyone.  My setter is 2.5 yrs old and is really coming into his own.  I hunted for four days straight, hiking 5-10 miles a day, and him at least double that.  He never slowed down.  Amazing.

If your setter is anything like the one's I have i'll bet your guesstimation of his ground coverage is off by quite a bit,on average my astro says the dogs do about 5-7 miles per my one,my male frequently can hit double digits on a mile and a half jaunt for me.
