Suprised, but excited
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:54:21 PM »
So I was taken a little by suprise tonight. While my girlfriend and I were driving over to her dads new place we were talking about just some random crap and she stops mid sentance and looks at me and says "Can I go hunt Blacktail with you next year." Now my first response was "what??", and my second response was "of course you can." My girlfriend is outdoorsy when it comes to camping and riding dirtbikes and such, but not much for hunting....or at least I thought. I'm pretty stoked to get to spend the day with her out doing what I love to do next year, its exciting to get to share my hobbies with someone new. The only thing I told her was that she better not bag a hob BT before I do or there was going to be trouble, lol.

That is awesome. My wife wanted to hunt, as well, so this year we did it. We rifle hunted (I have multi-season tag). She did no good but enjoyed it.

She wanted to bowhunt, as she is a very good shot, but she hurt her shoulder two summers ago and still struggles.

I would rather stuff anchovies down my shorts and toss myself to the Sealions at Ballard Locks before I would drag a GF along hunting. Sorry, no manicure salon or Starbucks out here hotstuff.

Well I am quite sure there are a lot of females on here to include my wife, that would buy the anchovies for you. And actually kick you dead in the A$$ so you would not have to toss yourself  ;)

Yeah that.  Hunting camp is for guys and the occasional dancing girl.

Krism,

Good luck with all that, let her hunt her own pace and hunt how she wants to. Not the way you hunt. I almost messed it up when my wife first started hunting with me. I was pushing her way to hard. After teh first couple of times. It was great to look over to my left sleeping under a zodiac to keep out of the rain in Alaska with my wife there with me.

You got it, I don't have to drag anything along just so I can do it. ;) No one said anything about family, I'm sure when my daughter is old enough, she may be right there with me. That will be her choice and time will tell.

I went out with my 10 year old daughter first time this year and it was awesome.  My hunting partners loved it also.  Dancing girls would be cool too.

I don't know what type of guys your used to hunting with, the guys I hunt with are either hunting or sleeping. There isnt much hanging out, as for the drinking. They have all year for that, it's nothing but business when the tags are in hand. That's why 10 percent of the hunters shoot 90 percent of the game. Their not playing grab ass in camp, their hunting. :o

Good to hear you've got a solid crew Hammer.  I mostly hunt solo because the few guys I've taken want to shoot everything that moves (squirrels with a .50 BMG, Really?), hide in the car from rain, show up late because hungover, and always want to go converse with ol JD.  I'd rather have female hunting partners that actually want to get out and hunt than most guys I've taken or even talked to about hunting.

I can understand your line of thought. I may consider it one day, if she could pack quarters. ;) but at the same time, the women I date aren't  built like pack mules. :) It's all good, they do their thing and I do mine. There's time for each other later.

I like my solitude time, I like to move as I please and work it by myself, I like to push myself. When I have a rifle on my shoulder and I'm alone with my thoughts is when I sort things out and at the same time lay some thoughts to rest. It's just my thing.

I do most of the packing out of the elk quarters with a nephew while my husband does the butchering and quartering out.  I am in much better shape than he is and more of a hiker.  He will help with the flat dragging which I can't do myself.  I also walk farther to hunt than he does, he likes to road hunt.  It just depends on your style.  I wouldn't say either of us fills more tags than the other we just hunt different.  I am 2 up on filling elk tags to his none ( I can boast a little can I?).  The whole experience from hiking to shooting (the smallest only a few seconds of the hunt part) to dressind out packing or dragging out to the cutting and wrapping and, of course, eating is all great.  I am a firm believer that alcohol should be left at home or under control, which most people cannot do.  As far as the dancers I believe that is a fantasy and not a reality.

My daughter is off to a good start at 14(been in the woods with me since the age of 5), she LOVES hunting, (especialy after her 250yard shot downhill for her first deer. In fact, i cant drag her fishing in my 21' trophy, but anything hunting wise, she is all over it!!

my only advice, is be patient, take your time and teach her right rather than, panicking about getting her a deer. if she truly enjoys it, it wont matter if she gets something right away. also, don't put her anywhere alone until shes 100% confident, and capable.

My girl isn' the manicure and dress type of girl. She is a hard core Motocross fan and loves to ride and will run the wheels off of most of you guys on a dirtbike. I'm not worried about her going out with me and if she doesn't like it then it's not going to hurt my feelings. I told her that she could hunt anytime she wanted with me, but under no circumstance could she come to elk camp with me. Deer, Bear, and Bird hunting I will take her anytime she wants, but Elk camp is my "vacation." I'm pretty stoked about the whole idea, I think the first few times we are going to go get on some pretty easy spots and try the sit and wait method and if she wants to hike then we can find a couple places to walk a bit.

And in a couple of years she will be in elk camp also. I said the same thing with rifle vs archery. You can rifle hunt all you want leave the archery to me. It is my unwinding time. She now bowhunts with me. And I have to say it is in the top 5 best experiences when you can call a bull in and watch your wife whack it. Then you get the look, kind of over the shoulder camo mask on. And the wink that goes with it. Now if I a dude did that to me we would be out there throwing down. If she likes it and wants to do it. then why limit her to certain parts of it?

So here is a situation. I think I am going to get her a rifle for christmas, heck even if she doesn't like hunting we can still go to the range. Should I start her out with a .243 or a .270? I was thinking a .270 using the logic that if she likes to go hunting, maybe eventually she will move on to something bigger than deer and would still be able to carry the same rifle. Correct me if I'm wrong here guys...

Good for you Kris. My girl has no desire to hunt big game with me. She did come to elk camp for the second week one year. It ruined my hunt >:( Actually its my fault, i allowed her to ruin it. Never again! She does like to shoot birds and fish with me from time to time. Im cool with that. She is definately an outdoor kinda gal but she can also clean up well. Her hobbies are the horses and quad riding. My hobbies are hunting fishing and quad riding. Its a very healthy thing to have a few interests but you need space to do your own thing as well. Good luck

I would go with the .243 if you are not sure she is going to hunt deer or not. The .243 will work for deer too. If she wants to hunt other big game then you have another reason to buy another gun.

Good for you man she sounds like a keeper. While my wife doesn't hunt yet she shoots like a pro and when we met she owned as many guns as I did. Someday she might hunt with me but in the mean time I'm kind of glad to have a chance to get out on my own.

After seeing the damage my daughters .243 is doing to her deer I would not hesitate to use it myself. As Plat said, if she wants to hunt bigger animals later, just get another gun!

I would rather stuff anchovies down my shorts and toss myself to the Sealions at Ballard Locks before I would drag a GF along hunting. Sorry, no manicure salon or Starbucks out here hotstuff.

I think I see the problem. You need to find a better class of girlfriend. Why date girls you obviously have no respect for? Find one who can keep up with you, then you might have a keeper.  They are out there. But they're harder to find than a 7 pt bull. You're hunting in the wrong spot.

My girlfriend told me she would go hunting with me. I asked her if she would shoot something and she said yes...GREAT!....Then she added "But I wouldn't eat it" :bash: "NO HUNTING FOR YOU!"

Congrats on the little lady wanting to hunt, sounds like a winner for sure.  I personally think as hunters we have to promote the sport as much as possible, there are already way to many people wanting to make all the rules for us that don't understand wildlife and balance and the hunting and outdoor lifestyle.
  God bless all you ladies who hunt and fish, my wife is my best friend and her redneckification still has a little ways to go.  :chuckle:

I put a kick-eze pad on my 270 and wife and all my buddys wives shoot it and have no problems, actually they quite enjoy it.  Great deer rifle and with the right bullet would work fine for elk.  IMHO.  :twocents:

started my son with 30-06, just downloaded to about 30-30 some loads and put a pachmeyer gel pad on his rifle and he started at 12, now 17 and shooting full boat loads.  wanted 270 for him, but had a 06.

Check out a 7mm/08, close to the same ballistics as the 270 with the kick of a 243.  My wife started out with a 243 and moved up to a 270 and still uses it.  Last year we bought her a 7mm/08 in a 6lb mt. rifle and she loves it.  She has hunted with me for 36 years and I've never regretted it.

My wife is 135 pounds and shoots a 300 win mag with muzzle break. If you have some friends that have different rifles go with them to the range let the girlfriend shoot some and see what she likes.

I have a lot of friends and family that take deer with the 243, 260 and 270. All good calibers. I know you want to get her a gun for Christmas, better off to take her to the stores and let her throw some rifles up to her shoulders and see which one fits her the best. Nothing worst than getting a gun that she is not comfortable with.

Go with a .243 youth model, its a great one to have later on when you have kids, I got my sons a .242, and a 257 roberts, winchesters, there light weight and great for deer hunting.

:yeah: My wife hunts with rifle & I use the muzzelloader, so during her season we go & she can hunt how & where she wants then I have my season to do my thing. It's all good, everybody is happy and plus it means more time in the field.

I like the way you guys think...buy the smaller caliber so I can buy more guns. Why didn't I think of that!?!

As far as her picking some up I had planned on having her feel some out next time we are at the gun shop to pick up her SR9c. Then picking up the one she felt the most comfortable with a few days later.

Congratulations are in order! You've found a good one.

Caliber and kick aren't the only things to consider. Weight and stock size is very important too. Being smaller in stature means that something that fits you and is comfortable for you to lug around all day might be too much for her.

Have fun helping her out. You're a lucky man.
