Rimrock Help
« on: July 14, 2008, 05:41:28 PM »
My buddy and I drew Rimrock tags for early archery elk Sept. 8-21. I have hunted this area a little several years ago but any help would be great. We plan on making a day trip this weekend to check the country out. Any starting points would sure help. We have typically hunted western Washington for elk but haven't had much success. This would be our first elk so we won't be too picky. A raghorn would be fine by us.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I had 4 points and my buddy had 3 so we got a little lucky. It looks like about 1,000 people put in for about 100 permits.

I would head into road 1203 it is closed to motor vehicles because of slides right now .From what I hear they will not have it open this year.
Walk in only. Good area.

I have hunted this area alot. I know of some really good areas but it really depends on how you hunt. Go buy a detailed map of this area. I would tell you to use google earth but they have not upgraded the satellite pictures yet.
Hike in just below the rimrock up on the Short and Dirty ridge also along the Tieton river on the 1000 rd there are alot of elk during the early season. We have found that the elk get pushed towards the base of the rimrock  and farther south the more there is pressure. This is a killer unit once you get to learn it. I have not instant messaged yet so I don't know how to do it but you can e-mail me if you want some more info. alan2simo@yahoo.com

Check out Tieton Basin, Jumpoff meadows, good camping up at lost lake and you can actually drop off into the country behind it, the elk in that area are thick...There are ORV trails all over that the elk use just as much as the ORV's they make for quiet walking and good access also.
Roads to check out are 554, 557, and Lost Lake Road. The Lost lake is good trout fishing also from shore or canoe.
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.
