Distance from ride to coyote/bobcat stand?

I was curious how far you guys walk to a stand. Most of my stands are between 50 feet to 50 yards but I walked about 150 yards into one up a hill and I think I made way too much noise plus I was exhausted after stumbling uphill that far. For the guys that walk a bit of distance to get to a clearing, how did you find the clearing?

Seems like I'm not walking far enough I guess. Wetside though I'm a little concerned with walking a mile out and not finding an area open enough for a shooting lane would discourage me to no end.

Weather and location make a huge difference in how far I spread my stands out. In heavy areas "shuch as big timber" calling for bears I might only go 300 yards before making another stand. Same thing for when its windy my sounds might not be going as far as I want  them 2 and I might only go 300-500 yards. 90% of my stands are more then 800 yards apart. I think you are setting up to close to your last stands and not covering as much area as you should be.

Not distance stand to stand carpy, distance from the road! My stands are usually at least a mile apart. Mostly because that's how far I go before I see another area that is shootable farther than 10 feet.

Oh you said distance from your vehicle. I was thinking you were driving from stand to stand. I got mixed up when I did not see you say road in your post. So you are asking how far to get off the road to call?

Correct. I can usually hear vehicles if any are passing on the road. I'm also wary of not being within earshot if someone decided my window was in their way to my stuff.

I gotcha now. I have called many times within 50 yards of my rig. A lot of bear stands I set up on are very close to the rig/road. Now these are private roads as well and legal to shoot on or from for me. Having cars going by means nothing to some of them because they are use to it. We have a main highway that goes threw our biggest ranch. I call a lot very close to that highway because the yotes are use to the noise of the cars. As long as you rig is out of eye sight from your prey then you should do alright.

Ok, so all of you guys that walk more than 300 yards from your vehicle to set up a stand, how do you sneak in without alerting all the forest that you're in the area?

A lot of the areas I call are ones I know well. Most are areas that I know like the back of my hand and have ways into them without getting seen. Such as a draw or timber blocking the view from the canyons I am going to setup in. I would suggest scouting the areas if you can and learning them well so you know ways to get into them without being seen.

I'm not worried about being seen. Either I'm busted or I'm not if they are in the area I think they will hear me first. I'm just amazed I guess. I figured this shouldn't be so hard since you always see them when you're not hunting them. Wiley for a reason I guess.

Yeah, I have yet to ever know of a yote that has busted me because of hearing me where I hunt. If they bust me its because they have seen me or smelled me.

When I was 16 years old and on my very first date with my ex-wife (hmmmm I wonder if this had anything to do with that outcome!    )  I put the cassette recorder on the roof of my Dad's pickup truck and turned on a dying rabbit scream from Burnham Bros.  I sat in the front seat with the spotlight and about 45 seconds later I shot a nice grey fox.  I know in Texas they shoot lots of yotes, bobcats and fox right from the bed of the truck.  I like to walk in a ways, but then I'm hunting the eastside and I can usually see a mile or more from my calling stands.  I try hardest to slip in unseen and not skyline myself.

They don't have much on their site, but still hanging on after 60 years!

I got to meet one of the Burnham Brothers just a few years ago at a Predator Callers and Houndsmen Expo in Silver City NM.  He was nice enough to autograph one of his old books for me.  Very cool meeting a legend in person.

I park the truck in the morning and usually don't see it again until dark.  I'm on the eastside though so I am thinking it is a little different.  Like said before just be quiet and don't skyline yourself.
